ABC6 and FOX28 Columbus

Raygene English, Journalism

Internship: ABC6/FOX28, Columbus

Through her internship with ABC6 and Fox28 in Columbus, journalism student Raygene English, ’22, has gained hands-on experience in all newsroom departments. Raygene feels her journalism coursework and involvement in Student Media prepared her for this opportunity.

In addition to courses such as Broadcast Reporting and Storytelling with Sound, Raygene’s involvement in TV2 News taught her skillsets she is applying to her everyday work as an intern.

“I’ve had the opportunity to shadow all newsroom departments, assignment desk, digital team, reporters, investigative reporting, and producers. No day is really the same. I have a set schedule and work with the departments that I expressed interest in on the first day.”

As an intern, Raygene has gained experience in a variety of areas. Some of her daily tasks can include logging events, writing scripts for the show, finding content, writing press releases and editing her own news packages for her reel.

Advice for interns:

“Just be open to trying new things and don’t be afraid to speak up about what you are interested in because it’s an experience that will help you in the future. Your internship is only what you make it, so make it a positive experience. Always show interest in how people do things and ask great questions. That’s a good way to build a strong network, especially if you volunteer to help out in some way.”
