Karly Van Boxel - Pro Football Hall of Fame Intern

Special Events and Marketing Intern, Pro Football Hall of Fame

During summer 2018, Karly Van Boxel worked on event logistics, internal communications, marketing and more for the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton. She was part of the organization’s annual Enshrinement Week, a city-wide celebration for the 2018 Hall of Fame class. She says: “We’ve met with people from NFL Studios, multiple professional teams, and ESPN. There are so many networking opportunities at the Hall and opportunities to learn about working in the sports and entertainment industry.”

Brandon Bounds, '19 - News21 Fellow

Brandon Bounds was chosen among the top student journalists in the country, to participate in News21, a multi-university, in-depth journalism collaborative based at Arizona State University’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication. In 2018, the cohort investigated hate in America. He says: “(I reported) on the law enforcement's role in hate crime reporting, hate against Asian Americans and people with disabilities and the climate of hate in America. Since day one, the School and student media has taught all the necessary skills and the importance of great storytelling and I can apply to what I'm doing this summer.”

As a reporting intern at WKSU, Ella Abbot worked on stories about public health, transportation and environmental issues during summer 2019. She says: “Typically a print journalist, my time with WKSU has helped me to step out of my comfort zone and gain a real appreciation for broadcast news. I’ve been able to work alongside reporters and editors on stories, as well as create my own stories for the air.”

Digital Content Intern, WESCO International

 

Mia Massetti chose advertising as a major because she loves the ever-changing pace of the market. During summer 2019, she experienced it firsthand as a digital content intern at WESCO’s headquarters in Pittsburgh. She says: “I will be creating a whole digital campaign and presenting it in front of the company at the end of the summer. What I love most about having an internship is being able to bring what I have learned at Kent to a real business. It gives you an opportunity to finally show what you are capable of … Businesses are always looking for new ideas, and you never know, you might have an idea that they never thought about!”

David Burgett took steps toward his dream of being a meteorologist as a live programming intern at the Weather Channel during summer 2019. Involved in TV2 since his freshman year, David discovered his passion for meteorology after taking a meteorology class. He says: “In that class I learned the basic fundamentals of how weather forms, different weather patterns and so much more! I started to incorporate the knowledge I was learning in class into my forecasts for TV2 and from there the passion has only grown!”

During summer 2018, Marissa Nichol reported, wrote and copyedited for the Cleveland Jewish News. She also got to participate in weekly editorial, sales and marketing meetings, giving her a comprehensive perspective of the business. She says: “Taking my reporting class and other classes prepared me for this position by teaching me the foundations of journalism writing, multimedia and ethics making me feel comfortable producing diverse content and interviewing sources.”
