We're Hiring: Director of Bands

We're looking for our next Director of Bands! This is a full-time, tenure-track 9-month faculty position. 


  • Kent State University's School of Music seeks a Director of Bands with demonstrated commitment to supporting a thriving and diverse music program for a full-time tenure track position to begin August 22, 2022.
  • Rank with be either Assistant Professor or Associate Professor depending on qualification and experience.
  • The Director of Bands will oversee a program housed in a newly designed $6.5 million Band and Percussion facility set to open in March, 2023.

Basic Duties

Conduct the Kent State University wind Ensemble; coordinate activities for the six bands currently active at Kent State University; create a positive learning environment for students in the band program; collaborate with the Director of Athletic Bands to align the work of the band program to the mission of the university as a whole; teach courses in conducting and other areas as aligned with the strengths and expertise of the successful candidate; contribute to the program, school, and university through recruitment, outreach and service; maintain an active profile in scholarly, creative, and professional activities in the area of band conducting.

Minimum Qualifications

Earned doctorate in music, or equivalent professional conducting experience, evidence of success and experience in conducting wind ensembles and teaching conducting, preferably at the collegiate level; demonstrated record of working effectively and collegially with faculty, staff, and students from diverse backgrounds; documents success with administration and recruitment; experience teaching in a secondary area of expertise is desirable.
