The Kent State University Orchestra presents their third concert of the 2017-2018 season on Sun., Dec. 3 at 3 p.m. in University Auditorium at Cartwright Hall. They will be joined by Matt Holm, Director of Percussion Studies at Kent State, to premiere the orchestrated version of Josh Gottry’s “Transitions for Percussion and Orchestra.” Cartwright Hall is at 650 Hilltop Drive in Kent. The Kent State University Orchestra, directed by Dr. Jungho Kim, will perform classic works alongside a new work by Josh Gottry. Audience members will first be treated to Wagner’s bold Prelude to “Die Meistersinger.” Next on the program will be Josh Gottry’s “Transitions for Percussion and Orchestra.” Concluding the concert will be Beethoven’s tonally adventurous and rhythmically distinct Symphony No. 7 in A major, Op. 92.
Matthew Holm is currently Director of Percussion Studies at Kent State University in Kent, OH where he teaches applied lessons, percussion methods courses and percussion ensemble. Holm has performed with the Phoenix Symphony, Minnesota Orchestra, Baton Rouge Symphony Orchestra, Duluth-Superior Symphony, and the Orchestra of the Americas. As a concert marimbist, Dr. Holm has competed and performed internationally and makes regular appearances at regional and national "days of percussion." Holm is also a strong advocate of new music and has performed with the Janus Percussion Duo, Penumbra Percussion Duo, Crossing 32nd Street, and the Arizona Contemporary New Music Ensemble (ACME).
Josh Gottry earned his BM in percussion performance at Northern Arizona University and a MM in composition at Arizona State University. He has successfully established himself as a highly regarded percussion instructor and performer and as an internationally recognized composer. Currently, he serves as adjunct music faculty for Chandler-Gilbert Community College and Grand Canyon University teaching courses in percussion, music theory and composition, and music humanities. Additionally, he works with percussion ensembles and private percussion students at all grade levels as a clinician and within his private lesson studio. Gottry's performance record spans over 25 years with experience including professional orchestras, musical theater, community and chamber ensembles, as well as solo performances and recitals.
