Kent State Youth Winds Announces 2022-2023 Season Auditions

The Kent State Youth Winds ensemble is having live auditions for its ‘22-23 season on Sunday, May 1, 2022  and Tuesday, May 10, 2022 in the Glauser School of Music at the Center for the Performing Arts, 1325 Theatre Dr., Kent Campus. Auditions are open to 8th-12th grade students.

Kent State Youth Winds was founded in 2021 as a collaboration between the Kent State Bands and Music Education departments to give young musicians opportunities “to develop their individual playing and ensemble skills while also meeting others like them from across Northeast Ohio,” said Wendy K. Matthews, Ph.D., leader of the ensemble. Kent State music education students will also participate with the ensemble in sectionals and conducting to develop their skills.

The ensemble will run during the academic year (September to May), meeting on Mondays at the Kent State University Campus from 7 p.m. to 9:15 p.m. and performing concerts in November, March, and May. The following instruments are part of the ensemble:

  • Flute
  • Oboe
  • Clarinet
  • Bass Clarinet
  • Bassoon
  • Saxophones (Alto, Tenor, and Baritone) 
  • Trumpet
  • Horn
  • Trombone
  • Euphonium
  • Tuba
  • String Bass
  • Percussion

To apply, fill out the Intent to Audition form and view the audition requirements at www.kent.edu/youth-winds under the How to Join tab. Acceptance emails will be sent by June 1. Once accepted, participants will fill out the registration and parent forms. Tuition is $250 for the year, with some limited, need-based scholarships available. Members of the ensemble must also remain enrolled in their school ensemble. Home-schooled students are exempt from this requirement.
