Student Leaders Attend National Gathering

Posted Oct. 8, 2013

Representatives from Kent State’s Salem campus recently attended the National Student Government Summit in Washington, D.C., meeting other student leaders from all across the country.

Attending the conference was Dr. Celeste Oprean, assistant dean, along with student government officers Michael Bentfeld, president; Elizabeth Miller, vice president; and Sue Wheeler, secretary. They attended workshops covering topics such as leadership, making student government grow, election tips, getting students to participate in student government and doing positive things for students.

“It gave us time to huddle up off campus and come up with a plan for the future,” Bentfeld said. “We got to see how other universities work with SGA and we got professional advice from the national chapter. We came away from this event energized and with great ideas for our campus.”

The group experienced the impact of the government shutdown while in the nation’s capital, but was still able to enjoy the trip. The shutdown helped show the importance of leaders working together and keeping the interests of those they represent in the forefront of decision-making.

Anyone interested in becoming involved in student government is welcome to attend a weekly meeting or contact one of the officers for more information.  Meetings are held each Monday at 11 a.m. in Room 144.
