Writing Commons Helps High School Students Become College and Career Ready - Spring 2013

The Writing Commons has developed and will oversee new writing centers in four area high schools: Aurora, Tallmadge, Stow-Munroe Falls, and Kent-Roosevelt with funding from a Race to the Top grant. "Our goal is to help high school students to develop the beliefs, habits and attitudes that lead to success in college-level writing," said Jeanne R. Smith, Director of the Writing Commons. Working with the College of Education, Health and Human Services; the College of Arts and Sciences; and teachers and administrators from the high schools, the Writing Commons will assess the work of the four writing centers to determine whether students who work with the tutors develop the habits of successful college writers:

  • self-efficacy with regard to writing
  • persistence when faced with challenging writing tasks
  • regular revisions habits

Volunteer tutors from the College of Education, Health and Human Services were trained in the Writing Commons, and the Writing Commons continues to support the high school tutors this semester. After the grant period ends, the Writing Commons will continue to assist high schools in developing and sustaining writing centers. "The centers we have developed this semester are only a beginning," Smith said. "There is much more work to be done, and writing centers can be leaders in that work."
