No. 29 Men’s Golf Advances to National Championship

KISSIMMEE, Fla.- The No. 29 Kent State men's golf team has booked its ticket to the 2018 National Championship with a fifth-place finish at the Kissimmee Regional at 20-under par 844 (280-280-284).

The Golden Flashes were among the leaders throughout the weekend on the par-72 Watson Course. Chase Johnson led the way Wednesday with a 4-under 68 as Kent State posted four scores of par or better in the final round to claim the final qualifying spot. The Flashes finished just two strokes out of a tie for third-place and will be joined by winner No. 8 Florida, UCF, No. 5 Vanderbilt, and No. 17 North Carolina at the 2018 National Championship.

Johnson finished in a tie for sixth after completing the three rounds at 9-under par 207 to match his lowest score and best finish of his senior season. After starting the final round with seven pars, Johnson shot 4-under, which included five birdies, over his last 11 holes.

Ian Holt tied for ninth at 7-under par 209 and sank a clutch putt on No. 18 to help the Flashes secure a return trip the National Championship. Sitting at 1-over through 12, Holt shot for par on five straight holes before recording a birdie on his final hole.

Gisli Sveinbergsson claimed a share of 14-place with a 4-under 212 for the tournament. Sveinbergsson birdied three of his final six holes and finished the day at 1-over 73.

Josh Gilikson and Bjarki Petursson both shot even-par 72 on Wednesday. Gilikson shot 2-over 218 for the tournament to tie for 47th and went for par or better on 12 consecutive holes during one stretch of the final round. Petursson tied for the team lead with five birdies on the day and finished tied for 61st at 6-over 222.

The Golden Flashes will move on to Nationals, taking place May 25-30 at Rich Harvest Farms Karsten Creek Golf Club in Stillwater, Oklahoma. Following the first three days of stroke play, only the top 15 teams and nine individuals not on an advancing team will compete on the final day of stroke play to determine the top eight teams that will advance to match play as well as the 72-hole individual champion. The team national champion will be determined by a match-play format that will consist of quarterfinals and semifinals conducted on Tuesday, May 29, followed by finals on Wednesday, May 30.
