Sport Administration Faculty Member to Receive Top Honor at 2019 NASSM Conference

Dr. Mark Lyberger, Associate Professor in Sport Administration, will receive the 2019 Distinguished Sport Management Educator Award from the North American Society for Sport Management at their annual conference this spring. This prestigious award recognizes scholars in the field who demonstrate “exceptional contributions to teaching and learning, excellence in pedagogical innovations in teaching, course design, curricular design, and/or assessment, sustained commitment to the improvement and quality of teaching and learning in the sport management disciplines, and sustained commitment to one’s own professional learning”

Dr. Lyberger’s recent research interests have focused on consumer consumption behavior, marketing, sponsorship, and leadership. In addition, he has also worked collaboratively with a variety of community and business organizations to conduct market and facility usage/impact feasibility studies. Currently, he is working with colleagues to complete texts on event planning and promotion/public relations in sport as well as a variety of studies related to consumption behavior and sport.

He has conducted numerous community feasibility studies, economic impact studies and marketing initiatives over the years, not only locally but regionally, nationally, and internationally. He has collaborated with the Cleveland Browns, the Cleveland Indians, the Cleveland Cavaliers and NASCAR to name a few. He has been part of a research team to conduct a multi-country study relative to sponsorship for the International Olympic Committee (IOC) working with colleagues from the US, Canada, France, and Germany.

However, Dr. Lyberger did not start off his career striving to become a sport administrator. As an Ohio native, he earned a B.S. in Health/Long Term Care Administration from Ohio University in 1985 and a M.A. from the University of Akron in 1989. He was actively involved as a consumer, coach, administrator, and participant in a variety of managerial and sport endeavors, and those experiences helped to solidify his chosen career pursuit of a Ph.D. in Sport Management/Marketing from The Ohio State University in 1996.

Since becoming a faculty member in 1996, Dr. Lyberger has spent his entire career here at Kent State University. As an active member of the KSU community, he always emphasizes a student-first mentality. “I have collaborated and engaged students in a variety of initiatives that foster their growth and development,” says Dr. Lyberger.

Please join our College in congratulating Dr. Lyberger for being honored with this award by the North American Society for Sport Management.
