Alternative Winter Break Trip Provides Opportunity for Service and Learning

Over winter break, 16 Kent State students and staff members traveled to Washington, D.C. for an Alternative Winter Break trip, where the group focused on hunger and homelessness in the nation’s capital. Students stayed in the Steinbruck Center, a ministry of Luther Place Memorial Church, that provides research opportunities to learn about the root causes of poverty and homelessness. Upon arrival, the group took part in a Homelessness and Poverty in D.C. Workshop, then became involved by volunteering with community service at D.C. Central Kitchen sites and also, Joyful Market, a fresh food market available to students at Kimball Elementary School.

While in Washington, D.C., students had the opportunity to have dinner and network with many Kent State University Alumni in the D.C. area, providing a unique opportunity to learn about career options and life after college! The trip wrapped up with a tour and sightseeing of the capital, the White House, and even a chance to sit and speak with Congressman Tim Ryan!
