Upward Bound Students Visit Kent State to Explore Majors and Careers

In the fall, over 100 Upward Bound students visited Kent State’s campus on two separate occasions to investigate college majors and careers, led by faculty and staff through our University partnerships. Activities included engagement with the College of Aeronautics and Engineering, College of Architecture and Environmental Design, College of Communication and Information and College of Nursing, as well as ACT preparation and a computer programming experience. Additionally, we offered a senior seminar catered to college and scholarship applications, an undergraduate student panel and a visit from Kent State’s Student Financial Aid Office and TRIO McNair Scholars. These events were supported by a group of the College of Education, Health and Human Services First Year Experience students.

Moving on into second semester, many of our students will participate in the Ohio TRIO Student Leadership Conference at Deer Creek Lodge in Mt. Sterling. The theme for this conference is Mission Possible: Students Today, Leaders Tomorrow, led by motivational speakers including some from our staff, who will encourage students to tap into their inner leader. Looking ahead to summer, Upward Bound has begun planning for our annual Summer Institute to provide academic and co-curricular encounters to support college readiness. If you know someone who is interested in joining us as a residential director, residential mentor, academic coach or instructor, have them contact us at upwardbound@kent.edu for more details.

  • Save-the-Date for our annual Senior Celebration on Thursday, April 30, 2020, from 6:00-8:00 pm. We will be honoring 60 high school seniors representing seven high schools in Northeastern Ohio.
