"This very first 'DI-sh Cooking Challenge,' the Fall DIsh Cooking Challenge, is the first of what I hope will be many future challenge projects we partner with the Hospitality Management program to offer through the Innovation Teaching Kitchen," said J.R. Campbell, executive director of the Design Innovation Initiative.

Design Innovation is about working together, across disciplines, to tackle challenging problems.

The Innovation Teaching Kitchen is an important component of the DI Hub as it’s a unique makerspace in which students can learn and demonstrate that dynamic, design innovation happens everywhere – in technology – fashion – art and, yes, in delicious cuisine.

The Hospitality Management program at Kent State is a leading undergraduate program in Ohio and the only one in the state with accreditation from the Accreditation Commission for Programs in Hospitality Administration, the accrediting body for hospitality administration programs. This program prepares graduates for careers in major hospitality industry segments, including restaurants; hotels and resorts; meeting, convention and conference centers; country clubs; and other hospitality venues.

This new Innovation Teaching Kitchen partnership with DI provides a top-of-the-line facility for the program’s students.

"Food and beverage operations are among the fastest-growing industry sectors in Northeast Ohio," said Aviad Israeli, professor and program director for Hospitality Management. "Preparing students for managerial careers in food and beverage operations requires innovativeness and creativeness. The Design Initiative Kitchen is the perfect hub that enables Hospitality Management students to express their innovative mindsets. The Fall DIsh Cooking Challenge brings together students, faculty and community, highlighting creativity and problem-solving in the face of complex challenges."

"We are grateful for the ability to help host such a great teaching kitchen environment," Campbell said, "and to help place (or re-place) kitchens into the psyche of those who think about important makerspaces for solving problems."
