Advertising

Advertising is so much more than creating effective, persuasive ads; it’s about developing brands and connecting to people. With a focus on strategy, Kent State advertising graduates are prepared to contribute productively to the ever-evolving, ever-expanding, global industry of persuasive communication in a variety of settings. You'll find our graduates working for agencies, corporations, media companies, not-for-profits and government agencies. Kent State offers both a major and minor in Advertising.

Communication Studies

Businesses, organizations, and nonprofit agencies consistently rank effective communication skills as the most important job-hiring consideration, even more so than technical skills. Pursuing a Communication Studies degree allows you the ability to bring diverse insights to the role of communication in a variety of ways. Managers, communication experts, teachers, sales representatives, political communication consultants, communication strategists and leaders are a few examples of possible careers for degree-seeking students. Communication Studies degrees examine the role of communication in a wide range of settings, focusing on how to adapt messages to diverse situations and circumstances. Kent State offers both a major and minor in Communication Studies.

Digital Media Production

Good storytelling can build businesses, advocate for causes, entertain and shape brands. The Digital Media Production major prepares students to create stories for these purposes and more, all while using the latest equipment and software. You’ll gain first-hand experience in all aspects of single camera and live multi-camera production - including shooting, audio recording, editing, writing, directing and producing digital films and live television. Film styles covered in the Digital Media Production degree program include narrative fiction, documentary, commercial and corporate productions. Kent State offers both a major and minor in Digital Media Production.

Journalism (Photojournalism Focus)

Journalists are reporters, watchdogs, storytellers. At Kent State, students gain experience covering real stories with the latest technology to prepare them for these roles and for jobs of the future. Kent State is home to one of three accredited journalism and mass communication schools in Ohio. Our program prepares students for media and communication careers in emerging mediums, which are projected to grow through 2026, due to the demand for creating, editing and disseminating information across platforms. Kent State offers both a major and minor in Photojournalism.

Photography

The Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography at VCD prepares students to become emerging professional photographers in a range of careers including Advertising, Fashion, Architectural, Food, Editorial Photography, Photojournalism, Commercial Photography, Portraiture, Photo and Art Direction, Digital Technical, CGI, Fine Art Photography, among others.

Public Relations

Kent State public relations graduates learn the business, they master the skills, and they get jobs.  They can be found working in every facet of employment - for public relations firms, integrated marketing communication agencies, corporations, nonprofit organizations, the entertainment and sports industries, cultural institutions, healthcare organizations and government agencies. We are proud that 80% to 90% of Kent State Public Relations graduates secure a job within the public relations field within a year of graduation. Others find jobs in human resources, sales and other related fields, or pursue graduate education. Kent State offers both a major and minor in Public Relations.

Visual Communication Design

A degree in Visual Communication Design prepares students for the graphic design and illustration professions. Students develop technical understanding and design skills in the organization of imagery and typography to communicate information in two-dimensional and three-dimensional forms. Students produce work for print, motion, video, screen displays, and interactive experiences, as well as package design, exhibition design, and environmental wayfinding.

Info Design - Minor

The Information Design minor offers students a basic understanding of visual communication tools, theory and ethics. Subjects covered include the creation of print and digital artifacts and an understanding of information design and how it is used in many fields of study. Those fields include business, science, communication, journalism. It is expected that these skills will enhance and complement students' respective majors.

Media Advocacy - Minor

The Media Advocacy minor prepares students to explore advocacy as both a professional discipline and an act of engaged citizenship by equipping them with theoretical and applied approaches for achieving meaningful social, political and cultural change through the use of media tools and concepts. The minor will deepen student understanding of individual activism, group advocacy and social movements. The required and elective courses will help students understand how to apply story-based strategies to create shared meaning, draw attention to societal issues and organize others to take action. It will also prepare students to understand how media shape individual decision making, public discourse and public opinion.

User Experience Design - Minor

The User Experience Design minor provides students with comprehension and applicable skills that focus on a product's overall customer experience, ease of use, control and feedback. The minor's curriculum covers fundamentals, principles, strategies, software, industry standards and professional ethics in regards to user experience design, user interface design, prototyping, usability, technology, software and information architecture.

Web Design - Minor

The Web Development minor allows students to develop the fundamental skills needed to pursue jobs in web development, web programming, web design and related fields. Students learn technical applications and skills in problem solving, design, user experience, creative applications, and programming. Students have the opportunity to use new and emerging technologies to design engaging multimedia experiences, improve existing systems, and study digital social structures.
