Addictions Counseling Certificate Program

Nationwide, there are more than 300,000 job openings for substance abuse treatment providers. In Ohio, projections indicate a 19% increase in substance abuse counselor positions from 2014-24. The Addictions Counseling Certificate Program (ACCP) provides students at the undergraduate and graduate levels who are enrolled in a behavioral science degree program (e.g., counseling, human services, criminal justice) with the educational content necessary to apply for chemical dependency counselor licensure in Ohio issued by Ohio Chemical Dependency.

Adolescent and Young Adult Education

The Adolescent and Young Adult Education (ADED) program, formerly the Secondary Education Program, dates back to the early years of the university. Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drug Prevention Certificate Program

American Sign Language/English Interpreting

The ASL/English Interpreting Program prepares students to work with children and adults who are Deaf or have a hearing loss. The interpreting courses and instructors prepare students to interpret in educational, K-12 settings. Graduates of the KSU program receive licensure from the state of Ohio to interpret in pre-K-12. These skills provide the framework for students to interpret at the post-secondary level. Students also receive instruction and practice to interpret in community settings. Community interpreting includes medical and mental health venues, social service offices, and employment, to name a few.

Early Childhood Education

The Early Childhood Education (ECED) program and faculty have a national reputation for their contributions to the field of Early Education. The Ohio license is for teaching children in preschool through grade 5. Our program places a strong emphasis on field experience. Gerontology - Minor

A minor in Gerontology provides students with knowledge of the aging process, and how these changes affect individuals psychologically, physiologically and socially. By 2050 it is estimated that one in five people will be over the age of 65, meaning there will be an increase in demand for individuals with an understanding of the aging process. This minor allows students to acquire knowledge in Gerontology and aging, which will enhance their ability to work with the aging population.

Human Development and Family Studies

The undergraduate Human Development and Family Studies (HDFS) degree prepares students for careers in the helping profession. Core coursework focuses on lifespan development and family issues and processes.  Students will acquire knowledge in child and adolescent development, adult development and aging, biological aspects of human development, family studies, intervention research, and developmental research methods.  This program is offered both as a major and a minor at Kent State.

Middle Childhood Education

We offer a Bachelor of Science in Education with two concentrations - students select from Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, and Language Arts - and the teaching of reading. Graduates of this baccalaureate program receive an Ohio Resident Educator Teaching License in Middle Childhood Education (4-9), valid for four years. This license is required for teaching and may be used for substitute teaching.

Nonprofit Studies - Minor

Available to all undergraduate students at Kent State University, graduates of this program come from a variety of majors, including: Business; Education; Health Sciences; Human Development and Family Studies; Gerontology; Political Science; Psychology; Sociology, and many more! This program allows students to gain real world experience with local nonprofit agencies through a practicum experience.  Students in this minor are prepared for careers in a variety of nonprofit organizations at the local, state, national and international level. Recreation, Park, and Tourism Management

Graduates of this program understand the wide array of benefits produced by recreation, park and tourism and they work professionally to provide these benefits at local, national and global levels. Furthermore, they work to assure that all people have access to these benefits regardless of ability or socio-economic status. Professional opportunities are available in, but not limited to:
