Flashes Fight But BG Claims Anniversary Award

KENT- The Golden Flashes got career nights from Tommy Ulatowski, Luke Floriea and Bryce Sheppert but Bowling Green prevailed 49-19 in a mid-week MACtion contest at Dix Stadium.

Ulatowski threw for a career best 289 yards in his second career start, completing 23 of 40 passes and a touchdown. His favorite target was Luke Floriea who grabbed nine passes for 95 yards, both career highs. Jaylen Thomas led the rushing attack with 75 yards on 18 carries and found the end zone for the second time this season.

The Flashes struck first, stringing together an 11-play drive that ended with a field goal from Andrew Glass. Bowling Green jumped on top late in the first, taking advantage of a fumble and an explosive pass play to lead 14-3 after the first quarter. A second Glass field goal, the fiftieth of his career, made it a one-score game. The Falcons would close the half strong, scoring twice in the final five minutes and took a 22-point lead into the half.

Kent State got a key fourth-down stop by Bryce Sheppert on the opening drive of the second half, one of his seven stops on the night. That tackle for loss forced the turnover and the senior had an interception later in the second half to highlight his banner day. Sheppert was second to Nick Giacolone who had a game-high 12 tackles, easily besting his previous season-high on Wednesday.  The turnover helped the Flashes flip the field, eventually leading to Hayden Junker grabbing a wide-open pass and rolling 21 yards into the endzone to make it 28-13. It would the closest the Flashes would get the rest of the way as Bowling Green added some late scores to capture the Anniversary Award for the first time in five years.

The loss drops Kent State to 1-9 overall on the season and 0-6 in conference play. Bowling Green picks up win number six and becomes bowl eligible and is 4-2 in MAC play. The Flashes wrap up the road schedule next Saturday with a trip to Ball State. Kick-off is set for 2 p.m. from Muncie and will air on ESPN+ and the Kent State Radio Network.
