Women's Basketball Corynne Hauser as told to FanWord

Kent State of Mind: Corynne Hauser - The Love of the Game

Growing up as the youngest with three older brothers, sports were always a big part of my life.

And out of all the sports I played, basketball was the one that stuck with me.

From the moment I could walk, I had a ball in my hand and I was always playing with my brothers.

They were my biggest influence and the reason I fell in love with the game.

Being the youngest was both fun and challenging.

We were always outside playing, getting competitive with each other.

My parents probably didn't love it because we would stay out until someone won, no matter if someone got hurt or scratched up.

But looking back, I credit my brothers for making me tough and competitive.

And now, they're my best friends, always supporting me.

While my brothers all played sports in high school, none of them continued in college.

But their presence and support have been vital to my success.

My parents have never missed a game, and that means the world to me.

They have made countless sacrifices for me, and knowing that they are in my corner, cheering me on, has been my biggest motivation.

A home away from home

When it came time to choose a college, I knew I needed a school that would provide me with the family-like support I had at home.

That's why I chose Kent State.

It's only an hour and fifteen minutes away from home, so my family can be around.

Having them there in the stands, cheering me on, has made my college experience so much easier.

Building bonds

One of my favorite memories at Kent State was our team trip to Greece.

We spent ten days exploring Athens and another island, cliff jumping, and even attending a cooking class together.

That trip was just like a dream.

Sometimes, I had to pinch myself back into reality.

It was an incredible bonding experience and a reminder of how lucky I am to be part of such an amazing team.

But it hasn't all been smooth sailing.

During my freshman year, I suffered a hip injury that required surgery.

There were doubts about whether I should continue playing or get it fixed right away.

But I wanted to play with a group of seniors and be a significant part of the team, so I pushed through the pain.

I got cortisone shots throughout the season to manage the discomfort, and then I had the surgery after the season ended.

It was a five-month recovery, but I was back on the court for preseason this year.

By then, I was itching to be back.

I couldn't wait to get to be on the court with my teammates doing what I love.

Triumphs and teamwork

Despite the injury setback, I was honored to be named to the All-MAC Freshman team.

It was a pleasant surprise, and it made me even more grateful for the support of my coaches and teammates.

They've taught me the importance of hard work and having people in your corner.

Without their guidance and belief in me, I wouldn't have achieved this recognition.

I owe many thanks to them.

Leading the way

As I continue my basketball journey, my goals for this season are to win the MAC tournament and make it to the NCAAs.

But beyond that, I want to be a leader for my team.

We lost a lot of seniors last year, and I want to step up and be the voice they need on and off the court.

For the duration of my career, I've had great leaders to look up to, and now it's my turn to pass it on.

Looking ahead to life after Kent State, I want to become a Division I basketball coach.

It's something I've always known I wanted to do.

I love the game, and I want to stay involved in it.

While I'm not sure what specific job I would want outside of coaching, I know that whatever I choose, I want it to be something I enjoy and make the most of the opportunities my college education has provided me.

As I reflect on my basketball journey, both my family at home and my Kent State family have been the driving force behind my achievements.

Their unconditional support and presence at every game have not only motivated me but also defined the essence of my success.

I recognize that without them, I wouldn't be where I am today, and as I further pursue my dreams, I am confident that they will continue to be my steadfast companions every step of the way.
