College Provides $20,000 in Financial Support to Nursing Students during COVID-19 Pandemic

As I have met and talked with more and more of you during my eight months here in the College of Nursing, I have seen firsthand how special nurses are. Nurses are empathetic, funny, no-nonsense, driven, amazingly compassionate and caring. It really does take a special kind of person to be a nurse, and as nurses do when times get tough, they rally together to take action. This is exactly what the Kent State University College of Nursing community has done in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

As soon as the economic toll became clear, our faculty and staff took immediate action to help to our students in the form of monetary support. Every year, the college hosts the Race into Finals 5K, which marks the end of the school year and the coming of summer. However, due to the crisis at hand, this year’s race was canceled. The race is a fundraiser for the College of Nursing Student Emergency Fund which provides assistance to Kent State nursing students during times of unexpected and dire financial need. Knowing the funds usually reserved to put on the race would not be utilized this year, a financial need application was created for students who have lost jobs, had parents lose their jobs, or are experiencing other needs during this crisis. More than $20,000 in emergency aid has been provided to our students so far.

Our alumni community response has been amazing, as it always is, during difficult times. For years our alumni have supported students through scholarships and events like the Race into Finals 5K. Without alumni support our students do not succeed and our community suffers. Nurses rally together and take action.

Our students will need more support over the coming months, and they are depending on the generosity of the College of Nursing community. Please consider supporting the Race into Finals 5K fund because Flashes take care of Flashes.

Thank you to those who are working on the frontline fighting this pandemic. Stay safe, and I hope for the best for you and your family.
