Two faculty members and eight students from the nursing program at Kent State University at East Liverpool volunteered their time during the recent Canfield Fair by conducting free blood pressure screenings at a booth sponsored by the Ohio Nurses Association, District Three, in the fair’s Medical Building.
The volunteer effort was initiated and organized by Angela Douglass, RN, MSN, CNS, an associate lecturer of nursing on the East Liverpool campus and an ONA committee member. The students are enrolled in the associate degree in nursing program.
Douglass noted that health screenings and education are essential aspects of nursing, and this type of activity also gives students the opportunity to network with other healthcare professionals.
“My goal for organizing this event is to not only be a role model for our students in the nursing profession, but to get them actively engaged in service learning and participate in community service,” she said. “I believe part of being professional in one’s nursing career means giving back and being involved in one’s community.”
Instructor Deborah Hager, RN, also participated in the screenings at the fair. The student volunteers were Cathy Nieto, Amanda Jacobson, Christine Hornyak, Kim Legerski, Britney Jordan, Ronnie Reed, Diana Brown and Julie Moore.
