Next Alumni Event – Race into Finals

From Touch Point Online Magazine, Vol. III, Issue 1 – 3/28/19

Alumni and friends, it’s time again to lace up your sneakers and join us as we kick off spring finals week with the 6th Annual Race into Finals 5K and 1-mile races on Sunday, May 5th at 8:30 a.m. Both courses will begin outside Henderson Hall on the Kent campus allowing all runners and walkers to experience Kent State University’s scenic, springtime views. The courses include paved pathways and a few small hills. As a family-friendly event, strollers and dogs on leashes are permitted. Long-sleeve race shirts are guaranteed to participants who register on or before Friday, April 26th. Undergraduate and school age students are eligible for $5 off the 5K race fee by using discount code ‘Student’.

“The premise behind our race is that it takes place prior to finals week when everyone is experiencing increased stress. As nurses, we know exercise is a great way to relieve that pent-up stress,” said Jennifer Shanholtzer, MSN, RNC, lecturer and Race into Finals 5K director. “The race also functions as a fundraiser for the College of Nursing Student Emergency Fund, which assists Kent State nursing students who may be experiencing financial emergencies.”

New this year, the 1-mile race will precede the 5K which will allow participants to cheer on each other. 5K runners are welcome to 'warm up' by running the 1-mile for FREE, however only officially registered 1-mile runners will be eligible for prizes. Top overall finishers in both races will be awarded prizes. 5K prizes will also be given to age group winners and a special 'Middle of the Pack' runner! Additionally, all Kent State students who participate in the 5K will be eligible to win a prize for ‘Schooling their Professors’ by beating the combined average run time of the professors participating in the morning’s race.

Afterwards, participants are invited to enjoy a variety of healthy snacks courtesy of this year’s sponsors, University Edge, Legend Medical and MDF Instruments.
