Runners Enjoy Scenic Kent State Views; Raise Funds for Nursing Student Emergency Fund

From Touch Point Online Magazine, Summer 2019 – Vol. III, Issue 2

More than 160 runners and walkers participated in Kent State University College of Nursing’s 6th Annual Race into Finals 5K run/walk and 1-mile fun run on Sunday, May 5, 2019. The events began at 8:30 a.m. outside Henderson Hall. The course, with its paved pathways and a few small hills, allowed racers to experience Kent State University’s scenic, springtime views.

In the women’s’ category, Jessica Wilk (19:27); Madeline Shanholtzer (23:48); and Kelly Albertson (23:49), led the way. The top three male finishers in the 5K were Tim Meyers (18:17); Jad Itawi (19:36); and Noah Hersey (20:45).

This year’s race featured a new ‘school your professors’ challenge. Each student who beat the combined average finish time of all the professors participating in the morning’s 5K were entered into a raffle for a chance to win a prize. Fourteen nursing faculty members accepted the challenge and crossed the finish line with a combined average of 30 minutes. Samantha Chaloupka (29:59) beat the faculty by a hair and was selected as the winner!

A ‘middle of the pack’ award was also awarded. Carrie Pascarella (33:03), who finished in 63rd place, took home the 2019 title.

“Thank you to all who participated and volunteered along the course to cheer on our runners and walkers,” said race director Jennifer Shanholtzer, MSN, RNc. “This year we raised $3,500 for the College of Nursing Student Emergency Fund which provides assistance to Kent State nursing students during times of unexpected and dire financial need. Over the past six years, we have raised more than $25,000 for the fund.”

The 2019 races were made possible through the support of many gracious donors and benefactors. Lead sponsors included LEGEND Medical, University Edge, MDF Instruments and Scrubs & Beyond. Post-race refreshments were provided by Planet Fitness. Thank you to Kent State University Police for helping to keep our participants safe and to our Kent State Student Nurses’ Association members for volunteering along the course.

The 2020 Race into Finals 5K run/walk and 1-mile fun run are tentatively scheduled to take place on Sunday, April 26, 2020, outside Henderson Hall on the Kent campus. These family-friendly races are open to all members of the community. In addition, strollers and dogs on leashes are permitted.
