Africa and the Global Atlantic World Conference: April 12-13, 2018

Featuring Black United Students' Leadership Conference

The Department of Pan-African Studies at Kent State University is pleased to announce its Fourth Biennial Africa and the Global Atlantic World Conference on April 12th-13th, 2018. The conference, themed “Intersectional Approaches to Survival: Legacies of Resistance,” focuses on the ways in which marginalized communities have confronted and resisted systemic forms of dominance. Registration is now open!  


The conference kicks-off on April 12 at 3 p.m. with a discussion/workshop on community engagement. A reception will follow at 5 p.m. in the Uumbaji Gallery Foyer of Oscar Ritchie Hall. The keynote address, by Professor Linda James Myers, will begin at 6 p.m.


Professor Myers is the Director of the African American & African Studies (AAAS) Community Extension Center, College of Arts and Sciences, and Faculty of the Department of African American and African Studies at Ohio State University. Professor Myers specializes in psychology and culture; moral and spiritual identity development; healing practices and psychotherapeutic processes; and intersections of race, gender, and class. The keynote address will be followed by the play Vital Grace inspired by the book Olympic Hero: Lennox Kilgour, written by Joanne Kilgour Dowdy, Ph.D. choreographed and directed by Gregory King, Kent State University professors.


This year’s conference will run concurrently with a Black United Students Leadership conference (April 13) and the annual Pan-African Festival and the New Black Plays (a Black Playwrights’ Showcase), April 12-14, 2018.  The festival activities will include free health and wellness workshops, art exhibitions, live performances, the Black Playwrights’ Showcase and a Pan-African Vendors Marketplace. The conference registration fee is $50 for non-KSU participants and includes the reception on April 12, 2018, continental breakfast, and lunch on April 13, 2018.  Conference-only-registration (does not include meals) is free for KSU staff, faculty, and students.  For more information on the conference and to register, please visit the Africa and the Global Atlantic World Conference webpage.
