New CPH Alumni Group Being Formed
Now with nearly 400 alumni, the college is moving forward to strengthen ties with them by officially inaugurating an alumni group, just in time for Homecoming 2014 on October 18. The organization will foster a mutually beneficial relationship between the college and its graduates through development of professional networking outlets, continuing education opportunities, volunteerism and social events. Membership is free.
Jenna Brinker, BSPH ‘14, MPH student Sarah Burkholder, James Hardy, MPH ’14, and Suzanne Krippel, MPH ’14, have stepped forward to form a steering committee to launch the new group.
Among the plans are “providing a one-stop online shop for professional networking,” says Hardy. “We’re envisioning a central place for employers to interact with our highly educated public health graduates about career opportunities,” he explains. “We’re also planning to develop resources to assist alums making a job change through relationships the college has with its public health career ambassadors and external advisory committees,” Hardy says.
Continuing education will also be a priority. “Most of us would like to continue our education journey with the college,” he says, adding that, “some need to do so for licensure, but others are genuinely passionate about their continued professional growth.” The alumni group and college will work together to develop continuing education opportunities, with one possibility being alumni global health trips similar to the annual immersion courses guided by faculty to Geneva and Central America.
“We’ll also be arranging volunteerism opportunities, so that alumni can give back to the college through mentorship of students, staffing the college’s exhibit at a career fair or helping prospective students understand the field of public health,” Hardy says. The group also plans to sponsor a couple of purely social events each year for alumni to have fun and get to know one other.
While a website for the group is still under development, graduates are being actively invited to join the Kent State College of Public Health Alumni group on LinkedIn. Interested alumni can also contact Hardy. “Come to the new gazebo on Front Campus below Lowry Hall during Homecoming on October 18,” he urges. “We’ll be there from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. helping out with the college’s presence and actively seeking support for our new group,” he adds. Faculty, staff, students and alumni will paint the Rock, have refreshments, watch the parade and more.
