PHSA Plans Full Schedule for Spring

PHSA has an outstanding schedule of community outreach activities planned for Spring Semester 2014

The Kent State Public Health Student Alliance (PHSA) has an outstanding schedule of community outreach activities planned for Spring Semester 2014, according to executive board member and doctoral student Lorriane Odhiambo, MPH’ 12.  They’ll be having fun, doing good and promoting health.

  • January 31  Students visited the Ronald McDonald House of Cleveland, spending several evening hours offering games and activities for children and assisting with the evening meal for residents.
  • February 22  PHSA members will host a work day at one of the Kent Habitat for Humanity houses under construction.
  • March 11  A yoga fundraiser will be held for the PHSA Global Health Fund.  One of the college’s graduate students, Diana Kingsbury will lead the yoga instruction. All levels of experience welcome at Student Center Room 308 from 6-7 p.m.
  • March 22  At the Miller Community House in Stow, an emergency shelter for men, women and children experiencing a housing crisis, students will prepare breakfast for residents.
  • April 5  Students will participate in the Kent State Relay for Life, to be held at the University Field House at 11:00 a.m.
  • April 7-13  National Public Health Week.  Multiple activities will take place:
  • April 8  The PSHA’s fourth-annual Public Health Fair will bring together students and the community.  Local and national health organizations are invited to exhibit to educate about their missions and to promote internships and careers.
  • April 8 The PHSA will again co-sponsor its successful LifeShare blood drive with the Office of Health Promotion.
  • April 10  National Alcohol Screening Day.  Students will staff this annual outreach, education and screening program that raises awareness about alcohol misuse and refers individuals with alcohol problems for further treatment.  Thousands of colleges, community-based organizations and military installations provide the program to the public each year.
  • April 25  The third-annual Art for Cancer silent auction will be held to benefit the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life.  The event will include an elegant dinner and silent auction featuring fine art and crafts donated by faculty, staff and students, demonstrating their hidden talents.  Last year, the auction raised $3,300 for Relay for Life, thanks to the support and generosity of the college community.
