A

ACCESS TO A CHAIR
Use: 
Allow this student access to a chair as needed.
Faculty Role: Contact SAS if a chair needs to be placed in your classroom space.

AMPLIFIED STETHOSCOPE
Use: 
This student will utilize an amplified stethoscope.
Faculty Role: None. The student will utilize this accommodation as needed.

ANNOUNCEMENTS
Use: Announcements should be in both written and oral formats.
Faculty Role: Provide written copies of announcements to this student. Where possible, assist all students by providing announcements in Canvas as well as out loud in class.

ASL (American Sign Language) INTERPRETER
Use: ASL interpreters will be assigned to your classroom. Interpreters may position themselves at the front of the classroom in direct sight of the SAS student. SAS may also add the interpreters to your Canvas classroom to better understand vocabulary and course content.
Faculty Role: Ensure that interpreters have the space needed to provide ASL interpreting. Upon request, provide course materials to interpreters to assist with preparation. Communicate with the SAS student, rather than to the interpreters.

ASSIGNED GROUPS
Use: Selecting or identifying group members for group activities may be challenging for this student. Wherever possible, please assign groups for all group work activities in your course.
Faculty Role: Where possible, assign this student to a group or assist them in identifying a team or group for projects.

AUDIO DESCRIPTION FOR VISUAL MEDIA
Use: An audio track that narrates the relevant visual information in media clips.
Faculty Role: Contact SAS if your course uses audio/video files.

B

BRAILLE
Use: 
Printed materials in Braille.
Faculty Role: None. Accommodation is managed by SAS.

BREAKS AS NEEDED
Use: Student is permitted to take reasonable breaks as needed. Students are asked to sit near the door and to leave quietly so they do not disrupt the class.
Faculty Role: None. The student will utilize this accommodation as needed.

C

CLASSROOM AMPLIFICATION
Use: Student requires the instructor's voice to be louder than its natural volume.
Faculty Role: Utilize the classroom amplification device (e.g. microphone) at all times in your classroom.

CLOSED-CAPTIONING
Use: This student requires closed-captioning videos.
Faculty Role: If, at the start of a semester, you have video/s that are not captioned, SAS will contact you to gather your materials and provide you with the captioned videos. However, using SAS to caption your videos is not a long-term solution and it is highly important that you spend time mastering this skill and deploying it regularly.
Your end goal is accurately captioned videos in all of your courses. We recommend that you learn how to caption videos using Kaltura Reach, then begin remediating a few videos each month until the entire course has accessible materials. Apply captioning practices to EVERY NEW video you create.

COPIES OF POWER POINT SLIDES
Use: Provide electronic or hard copies of all course materials, including Power point slides, before each class session.
Faculty Role: Provide the student with copies of slides or other materials shown during class. Where possible, share these with the student electronically prior to the class. If you already post Power point for the entire class, consider providing them to SAS students prior to class.

D

DARK MARKERS FOR WHITEBOARD
Use: Student cannot see or understand material written in colors other than dark blue/black.
Faculty Role: If your classroom has a whiteboard, use dark blue or black markers to ensure proper contrast.

E

E-TEXT
Use: 
Accessible electronic version of all course materials, including textbooks, articles, handouts, and slides.
Faculty Role: Methodically (a portion of each course's materials each month, for example) convert all course materials to accessible versions. If any resource has not been converted by 2-4 weeks before the semester begins, contact SAS.

ENLARGED PRINT MATERIAL
Use: 
This student requires enlarged print materials. 
Faculty Role:  Email electronic versions of all course materials to the SAS office at their respective campus at least 2 weeks prior to the first day of class. Include class handouts, in-class reading assignments, and syllabus along with all textbooks. SAS will ensure the clarity of the text, picture(s), graph(s) and/or table(s).

EXTENDED TIME FOR IN-CLASS ASSIGNMENTS (1.5x, 2x)
Use: 1.5x regular time for all graded in-class assignments.
Faculty Role: Provide additional time to complete timed in-class assignments.

EXTENDED TIME FOR EXAMS AND QUIZZES

Use: extended time for all graded exams and quizzes as designated in Course Accessibility Letter 
Faculty Role: Provide additional time to complete timed exams or quizzes using one of the modalities below: 

  • Online: Extend time in Canvas for online quizzes. See appropriate Canvas How-To link below. 

  • In-Person: Use the SAS Exam Instruction Form to send in-person or paper-based exams or quizzes to SAS for administration. 

  • Identify alternative proctoring arrangements with the student. 

Note: Quiz availability dates still apply when moderating a quiz. If the Until date passes before a student completes an extra attempt or extended-time quiz, any in-progress quizzes auto-submit and the quiz closes, even if the student's attempt has not expired.

F

FM UNIT
Use: 
This student utilizes an FM unit. SAS provides students with an FM device.
Faculty Role: The student may provide you with a microphone to wear during class. Utilize the microphone for all speaking in the classroom.

FOOD AND DRINK
Use: 
This student should be permitted access to food and/or drink during class and exams unless food is prohibited due to safety concerns. If having food or drinks in class is a concern (such as a lab), the student may need to step out to eat or drink.
Faculty Role: None. The student will utilize this accommodation as needed.

FURNITURE MODIFICATION
Use: 
SAS will provide the necessary furniture for this student.
Faculty Role: If the indicated furniture is not placed in your classroom by the first class session after you receive the student’s CAL, please contact SAS.

H

HEADPHONES OR EARPLUGS
Use: 
Use of headphones not connected with an audio device or ear plugs during class. The student may wear headphones or ear plugs during class to reduce sensory input. They are still expected to be able to hear instructors and other students, so the headphones should not be plugged in or transmitting audio.
Faculty Role: None. The student will utilize this accommodation as needed.

I

IN-CLASS AIDE
Use: 
Aide for in-class medical/personal assistance. The aide will be provided by the student and attend class as needed.
Faculty Role: None. The student will utilize this accommodation as needed.

IN-CLASS ASSISTANCE DOG
Use: 
This student has an assistance dog. See the SAS website for information about assistance animal rights and responsibilities.
Faculty Role: None. The student will utilize this accommodation as needed.

L

LAB ASSISTANT
Use: 
Provided by SAS to assist the student in a lab setting. The lab assistant may perform manual or visual tasks at the direction of the SAS student.
Faculty Role: This is only necessary in interactive lab classes. SAS may request that the lab assistant meet with you to review any necessary safety protocol in a lab setting. You may also be asked for suggestions of students who could be employed as a lab assistant.

LAPTOP OR MOBILE DEVICE IN CLASS
Use: 
Use of a laptop or other mobile computer device for note-taking or in-class assignments. The student will provide their own device and is responsible for using the device appropriately.
Faculty Role: None. The student will utilize this accommodation as needed.

M

MEMORY AID FOR PRESENTATIONS
Use: 
Written memory aid for presentations. The student should discuss requested memory aids with their instructor prior to the presentation, and instructors may require advance review of memory aids. Contact SAS if memory aids may alter course objectives.
Faculty Role: If your class has presentations that require memorization, contact SAS to discuss how this accommodation might be implemented in your class.

N

NOTE-TAKING ASSISTANCE
Use: 
Note-taking accommodations may be required for students whose disability impairs their ability to learn to take quality notes. Students may use a digital speech-to-text service or request a peer notetaker from among the course's students.
Faculty Role: None unless the student requests a peer note-taker. If so, SAS will ask you to make an announcement in your class to recruit a peer note-taker. SAS will provide you with a sample announcement and additional information if this option is needed.

P

PAPER-BASED COURSE MATERIALS
Use
Printed course materials in lieu of digital materials (e.g. syllabus, textbook, articles, etc.).
Faculty Role: Print out all course materials for the student. Contact SAS if assistance needed.

PHOTO OF BOARD
Use: 
This student should be permitted to take a photo of written work on the board when necessary.
Faculty Role: None. The student will utilize this accommodation as needed.

PRIORITY SEATING
Use: 
Please allow this student to have preferential seating of their choice in the classroom.
Faculty Role: If your class utilizes assigned seating, privately (not in front of other students) discuss seating preference with this student. The student may need to sit in a specific location, such as in the front row, near a door or window, or with their back to the wall.

R

REAL-TIME TRANSCRIBING
Use:
A real-time transcriber will be assigned to your classroom. Transcribers may position themselves at the front of the classroom in direct sight of the SAS student. SAS may also add the transcribers to your Canvas classroom to better understand vocabulary and course content. SAS may also utilize remote transcribing services. Students will set up the necessary equipment.
Faculty Role: Ensure that transcribers have the space needed to provide real-time transcribing. Upon request, provide course materials to transcribers to assist with preparation. Repeat questions from other students in a large classroom.

RECORD CLASS LECTURE
Use: 
This student may audio record class lectures. The student is responsible for obtaining the recording equipment. Please note, recordings will only be used for academic purposes related to this class and the student has been advised that the recording(s) should not be shared with others. Please contact the SAS office at your respective campus with any questions or concerns.
Faculty Role: If your class is discussing sensitive topics that will not be included on an assessment, speak with the student in advance about recording concerns.
How-To: If you are interested in recording an in-person or synchronous class lecture, Microsoft Teams can record and save screen-based presentations for attendees to review later.

REDUCED DISTRACTION FOR IN-CLASS ASSIGNMENTS
Use: 
Allow the student to complete individual in-class assignments in a reduced distraction location.
Faculty Role: Speak with the student to see how they want to use this accommodation. You may need to identify a reduced distraction location for the student such as an empty classroom or conference room.

REPEAT QUESTIONS AND COMMENTS
Use: 
Repeat or rephrase questions or comments from the class before responding.
Faculty Role: Be sure to repeat questions from the class so that the student is able to hear them. This is especially important in a large classroom or where amplification is used.

S

SPEECH READING
Use: 
This student relies on lip reading.
Faculty Role: Face the student directly and ensure they have the option to sit in the front row if needed. Repeat questions from students behind the SAS student.

SERVICE ANIMAL
Use: 
This student has a service animal. State law requires that service animals be permitted into all public facilities. See the SAS website for information about service animal rights and responsibilities.
Faculty Role: None. The student will utilize this accommodation as needed. If questions or concerns arise, study the Animals on Campus webpage or contact SAS.

SPELLING ACCOMMODATION
Use: 
Unless spelling is an intrinsic component of what is being evaluated in the assignment, SAS recommends that spelling not be taken into account when grading in-class work for this student.
Faculty Role: If your class has graded assignments that are completed during class, do not penalize the student for spelling mistakes as long as you can understand the student’s answer.

SUNGLASSES OR RELATED DEVICE
Use: 
Use of sunglasses or related device during class to reduce sensitivity to lights.
Faculty Role: None. The student will utilize this accommodation as needed.

T

TECHNOLOGY FOR MEDICAL MONITORING
Use: 
The student should be permitted access to their smartphone or other technology during class for monitoring of medical information.
Faculty Role: None. The student will utilize this accommodation as needed.

W

WEBCAM NOT REQUIRED
Use: 
This student should not be required to use a webcam during class.
Faculty Role: During online class sessions, do not require the student to utilize the webcam. It may be appropriate to ask the student to turn on their camera when actively participating or when they are being graded if seeing the student’s facial expressions is essential to the assessment.

WHITEBOARD ACCESS
Use: 
Use of a small, personal whiteboard during class for note-taking and problem solving.
Faculty Role: None. The student will utilize this accommodation as needed and will provide their own whiteboard.
