International Ph.D. Application Process

Application Materials

A complete application includes all of the materials described in steps 1-8 below. If you are also interested in a graduate assistantship, you should also complete step 9.

Applications must be completed and submitted online along with the application fee. The online application includes the statement of purpose, but all other application materials (transcripts, letters of reference, GRE scores, TOEFL scores, financial information worksheet) must be mailed to:

1. Online Kent State University graduate application Applications for graduate school at KSU must be submitted online. Begin the process here:

2. $70 nonrefundable application fee 

You will be prompted to submit your payment during the online application. 

3. Statement of purpose

All applicants are required to submit a statement of purpose describing their current academic interests, research interests, long-range career goals, and how admission to the Department of Sociology at Kent State University, in particular, will help you achieve these goals. Please send your statement to the Office of Global Education at the address above.

4. Three letters of recommendation

Three letters of recommendation are required. Please instruct your references to use the following letter of recommendation form. They may also supplement this form with a written statement on their official letterhead. Your references should send a signed, hard copy of the completed reference form to the Office of Global Education at the address listed above; the letter should not be submitted by the student applicant. 

5. Official academic transcripts

Kent State University requires official transcripts from any academic program in which an applicant is enrolled for 8 or more credit hours. All official transcripts should be mailed to the Office of Global Education at the address listed above.  

6. Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) scores

International students must submit TOEFL scores. The TOEFL exam is administered by the Educational Testing Service (ETS). Information about the exam is available from the ETS website. Have ETS send your official scores to the Office of Global Education address listed above. You can indicate this when you take the exam or by contacting ETS as described on the ETS website.

7. Graduate Record Exam (GRE) scores

The GRE is required of all applicants.  The GRE exam is administered by the Educational Testing Service (ETS). Information about the exam is available from the ETS website. Have ETS send your official scores to the Office of Global Education address listed above. You can indicate this when the exam is taken or by contacting ETS as described on the ETS website.

Applicants must have taken the GRE within the past five years. If the GRE was not completed in the last five years, the student must take the GRE again.

8. Financial information worksheet

All applicants who are not citizens or permanent residents of the United States must complete the Financial Information Worksheet for International Students. The worksheet must be accompanied by a current bank statement from the sponsor’s financial institution. The form can be accessed through the online application process.

9. Application for graduate assistantship

Students who are interested in receiving a graduate assistantship must fill out the following application for funding form. This form should be sent to the Office of Global Education at the address listed above.
