Distance Learning Community of Practice

What is a Community of Practice?

Etienne Wenger, who many view as the “founder” of the concept, provides this basic definition: “Communities of practice are groups of people who share a concern or a passion for something they do and learn how to do it better as they interact regularly.” A true community of practice is made up of people who are practitioners. Our goal for the Stark Campus Distance Learning Community of Practice (DLCoP) is to build a supportive community through which we can share resources and deepen our expertise in teaching online and hybrid courses.

What support does the Stark DLCoP provide?

The Distance Learning Community of Practice provides the following opportunities:

  • A series of professional development workshops for new and experienced online and hybrid instructors
  • Monthly lunch meetings in which faculty give short presentations sharing their expertise
  • Monthly teaching and tech tips (via email)
  • Online repository of resources and support information (via DLCoP Blackboard course)
