Effective Aug. 4, 2021:

The Recreation and Wellness Center is making changes to its COVID-19 precautions, in line with recommendations by the CDC and current Kent State policies.

Face coverings are required indoors for everyone, regardless of vaccination status, on all Kent State campuses.

Physical distancing: We will no longer require physical distancing on our campuses. For the fall 2021 semester only, instructors teaching in person may choose to maintain a 3-foot distance between seats as they consider the nature of classroom interactions, the size of the classroom, the length of time in the classroom and the number of students. For the spring 2022 semester, all courses traditionally held in person will be at full capacity. Please note: Our machines and equipment are still placed at least 6 feet apart from other equipment at this time.

Cleaning procedures: You will continue to wipe down your machine or piece of equipment after you have finished using it. Once you have done this, you will take the green card, located on the machine or piece of equipment, and flip it to red. The cards are secured with Velcro. This will let our employees know that the machine has been used and must be sprayed down and given a 10-minute sanitizing break. A similar protocol is used for our handheld equipment and attachments. After you have used a piece of handheld equipment, please wipe it down and place it in the marked-off area on the floor for our employees to sanitize and put away.

Unavailable services: Personal training, basketball, locker room showers and the traditional drinking fountain are currently unavailable. The water bottle filler, connected to the water fountain, is working and available for use.

Who can use the Recreation & Wellness Center?

The facility is open to current Kent State Stark students, all Kent State faculty, staff and their dependents age 16 and older, as well as Stark State College faculty and staff, employees of the Stark County Educational Services Center and Kent State alumni. No guest passes will be sold at this time.

Will I have to wear a mask?

Face coverings are required indoors for everyone, regardless of vaccination status, on all Kent State campuses. Continue to follow Flashes Safe Eight.

What will I have access to while in the building?

You will be able to use all of the equipment you are used to in our facility, including free weights, strength and cardio machines. All are spaced 6 to 8 feet apart from other participants. There will be additional cleaning requirements requested of you, so please watch for signage. There will be no basketball at this time. Locker rooms will be available for single use; showers and the traditional water fountain are not available.

How will the equipment be cleaned?

All machines will be disinfected by staff members after each use. The staff will utilize a card system – “red” means the equipment needs to be cleaned and “green” will indicate the equipment is ready for use. Small equipment will be left at a cleaning station after use for cleaning by the staff. Disinfecting supplies and hand sanitizer also will be available for patrons to use.
