Cast

Brian Johnson: John Proctor
Brian Keith Johnson has performed many roles in opera from Figaro in il barbiere di Siviglia to Ford in Falstaff.  As a member of Actors’ Equity Association, he has also performed a variety of musical theatre roles ranging from Jim in Big River to Father/God in Children of Eden.  His concert repertoire includes most of the major baritone works such as Carmina Burana, Elijah, The Verdi Requiem, Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, The Brahms Requiem and The Faure’ Requiem. He has performed operatic and musical theatre roles across the United States including performances with The Cleveland Orchestra, Akron Symphony Orchestra, Canton Symphony Orchestra, Cleveland Opera, Lyric Opera Cleveland, Blossom Festival Orchestra, Opera Theatre of Pittsburgh, Opera Western Reserve, Carolina Master Chorale, Charlotte Symphony Orchestra and Porthouse Theatre. Mr. Johnson received his bachelor’s degree from The University of Akron and has also studied abroad at The New Opera Academy of Rome in Rome, Italy and The American Institute of Musical Studies in Graz, Austria. This season’s performances include concerts with Red Campion, The Akron Symphony Orchestra, The Suburban Symphony, Western Reserve Chorale, the Ashland Symphony and The Chagrin Valley Studio Orchestra.  He will also sing the roles of The Negro in The Roar of the Greasepaint, the Smell of the Crowd, Germont in La Traviata, Figaro in The Barber of Seville, Schicchi in Gianni Schicchi and John Proctor in The Crucible.

Laurel SeedsLaurel Seeds: Elizabeth Proctor
Laurel Hines Seeds received her Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees in Music Education and Vocal Performance from Kent State University. She is an Associate Professor of Music and Department Coordinator at Kent State Stark. She teaches applied voice, applied studio musicianship and class piano. Laurel is a frequent recitalist, performer, accompanist and music director and has performed with The Lyric Theatre Ensemble, Akron Lyric Opera Theatre, Canton Comic Opera, the Cleveland Orchestra Blossom Festival Chorus and the Concert Series of The English Church of St. Mark’s in Florence, Italy. She is a member of Delta Omicron, The MacDowell Music Club, The National Association for Music Education, Ohio Music Education Association and is active as a Solo and Ensemble adjudicator in the state of Ohio.

Ken KramerKen Kramer: Thomas Putnam
Kenneth Kramer holds bachelor’s (1979) and master’s (1984) degrees from Kent State University and is associate professor of music at Kent State University at Stark. He was a founding member of the Ohio Light Opera in Wooster where he performed and served as assistant to the stage director for 11 seasons.  He has been soloist with the Akron, Canton, Youngstown, Mansfield and Tuscarawas Symphony Orchestras and has performed in more the 100 different productions of opera, operetta and musical theatre. Mr. Kramer also performed the Britten War Requiem under Robert Shaw at Carnegie Hall and was Captain Ahab in the world premier of Moby Dick, an American Opera at the Canton Player’s Guild. The recording of The Nativity According to St. Luke by Randall Thompson on the Koch label features Mr. Kramer in the role of Zacharias.

Lara Troyer: Ann Putnam
Described as "singing with an engaging, robust tone" (clevelandclassical.com), Ms. Troyer is a versatile soprano, at home on the opera stage as well as concert and recital stage. Most recently she performed the Ohio premiere of Ricky Ian Gordon’s Orpheus and Euridice with Nightingale Opera. Ms. Troyer has toured with the New Sigmund Romberg Orchestra as their soprano soloist throughout the Midwest and Southeastern United States. She also spent four years as an Associate Artist with Cleveland Opera. She has made solo appearances with the Akron Symphony, Canton Symphony Orchestra, Lansing Symphony Orchestra, Rochester Symphony Orchestra, Kent Chorus and Orchestra, Kent/Blossom Chamber Music Summer Series, Southeast Iowa Symphony Orchestra, and PAND (Cleveland). She has sung lead roles with Lansing Lyric Opera, Lorain Community College and Akron Opera Theatre (Guest Artist for both), Opera in the Ozarks, and Bay View Music Festival. Last spring she sang a recital of new music for the Cleveland Composer’s Guild. Ms. Troyer recently performed a Midwest recital tour sponsored by Allied Concert Services. She won the Alpha Corinne Mayfield Award in Opera Performance under the National Federation of Music Clubs and the Sing Lansing! Competition; was a finalist in the Opera Columbus Competition and the National Opera Association Vocal Competition; and a regional winner in the National Association of Teachers of Singing Artist Award (NATSAA) competition. Ms. Troyer regularly performs under the auspices of Young Audiences of Northeast Ohio and The Children’s Concert Society of Akron. She has served on the voice faculty at the University of Akron, The College of Wooster, and currently teaches at Kent State University.

Melissa DavisMelissa Davis: Abigail Williams
Melissa Davis has performed with Nightingale Opera Theatre, Opera Cleveland, Opera Columbus, Akron Lyric Opera, The Ohio State University Opera, and Kent State University Opera. During previous summers, she has performed as a member of the Opera Studio at the American Institute of Musical Studies (AIMS) in Graz, Austria, as a Young Artist at the Asian International Opera Festival, in Taipei, Taiwan, as a Young Artist at the Sugarcreek Symphony and Song Festival in Watseka, Illinois, and as a Company Member at the Huron Playhouse in Huron, Ohio. Notable roles include: Greta Fiorentino in Kurt Weill’s Street Scene, Adele in Die Fledermaus, Anna Held in the American music review Tintypes, Susanna in The Marriage of Figaro, Lucy in The Telephone and Josephine in HMS Pinafore. Upcoming roles include: Abigail in Robert Ward’s adaptation of The Crucible, and Sophie in Jules Massenet’s Werther. Ms. Davis received a Bachelor of Music degree in Vocal Performance from Kent State University in 2005 and a Master of Music degree in Vocal Performance in 2007. She received a second Master's degree in Vocal Pedagogy at The Ohio State University, and a Singing Health Specialization certificate in 2010. Ms. Davis has taught voice at both The Ohio State University and Kent State University. She also served as the Vocal Music Director for Kent State University’s pre-college voice program from 2007-2009. She currently serves on the voice faculty at Kent State University in Kent, Ohio, and Kent State University at Stark in North Canton, Ohio. Working to create performance opportunities for aspiring opera singers, Ms. Davis is the creator and Artistic Director of Nightingale Opera Theatre in Northeast Ohio.

Denise Milner-HowellDenise Milner-Howell: Rebecca Nurse
Denise Milner Howell, mezzo-soprano, is equally at home on the opera, musical theatre or concert stage.  Her solo engagements include performances with Opera Cleveland, Chautauqua Opera, Red {an orchestra}, Akron Lyric Opera Theatre, Tanglewood Festival, Akron Symphony Orchestra, Carousel Dinner Theatre, Sounds of Sousa Band, and Buffalo Philharmonic.  Additionally, Ms. Howell is a founding member of the vocal chamber music ensemble “Red Campion," performing concerts and offering outreach into schools.  She can be heard in a CD release on the North/South recording label singing “Sappho Songs,” composed by Ira-Paul Schwarz. In addition to performing, Ms. Howell is an active voice teacher. She currently teaches at Ashland University, and has served on the voice faculties of the University of Akron School of Music, and the State University of New York College at Fredonia. Ms. Howell earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in music education from Long Island University/CW Post College, and a Master of Music degree in vocal performance from New England Conservatory of Music. She lives in Sharon Township, Ohio with her husband, Gregg, their two sons, Miles and Wesley, and daughter, Eleanor.

Daniel DotyDaniel Doty: Reverend Samuel Parris
Daniel J. Doty is a classically trained tenor who is equally at home on the opera, theatre or concert stage. He has appeared with the symphonies in Akron, Mansfield, Marion, Muncie (IN), Urbana (IL) as well as community bands in Medina and Wadsworth. Performances have found him in a variety of settings from church sanctuaries to concert halls, and at such locations as the Celle di Puccini (Puccini summer home) and Severance Hall (home of the Cleveland Orchestra). Daniel is a regular performer with Opera Circle and Opera Per Tutti both of Cleveland. As participant of the Opera Theatre and Music Festival of Lucca, Daniel spent six weeks in the Tuscan village of Lucca (Italy) singing operatic arias at various venues associated with Lucca's most famous son, Giacomo Puccini. (More musical information can be found at www.danieldoty.com). Daniel has appeared in Master Classes with such Metropolitan Opera stars as Martina Arroyo and Angela Brown. A past Guest Artist with the Masterworks Festival, Daniel worked with David Geier, Assistant Conductor for the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. The Rev. Daniel Doty serves as Senior Minister of Trinity United Church of Christ. Rev. Doty has served congregations in Illinois and Ohio. He has a Bachelor of Music Education degree from Bowling Green State University. He taught in two public school systems in Ohio before perceiving his call to ministry. Rev. Doty attended Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary, Evanston, IL and earned a Master of Divinity degree and was ordained in 1998. Rev. Doty actively teaches in the areas of worship/liturgy and hymnody. He has served as the President of the Wadsworth Ministerial Association for the past four years. He has been a member of the Order of Saint Luke for 15 years and currently serves as the Prior of the East Ohio Chapter. Rev. Doty is also the Managing Editor of Sacramental Life a publication of the Order of Saint Luke (an international order of lay and clergy dedicated to sacramental and liturgical scholarship, education and practice.) Daniel serves as chair of the Annual Gathering Planning Committee for the Ohio Conference of the United Church of Christ. He is also on the Council of the Eastern Ohio Association of the Ohio Conference UCC, and serves on the Board of Trustees of the Akron Symphony. Dan lives in Wadsworth with his wife Amy. They have three children Kristian (University of Akron), Sean (Ashland University), and Kaetlyn (still at home!).

Jim GraySmith: Ezekiel Cheever
James GraySmith brings a wealth of experience in vocal performance and theater in his role as tenor of the Lyric Theatre Ensemble. Currently a soloist at the historic Saint John the Baptist Catholic Church in Canton, he has performed with many of the finest orchestras, theaters and universities in Northeast Ohio. He has sung with the Canton Symphony, the Cincinnati Opera, The Ohio Light Opera, as well as the performance of Verdi’s Requiem with conductor Loren Mazzel in his final performance with the Cleveland Orchestra at Carnegie Hall in New York City. Jim is a founding member of the Actors of Farinella’s Ghost, a professional theater company in Canton. He has also worked with the New York director, Dorothy Silver, and directed productions for the Lyric Theatre Ensemble, The Player’s Guild of Canton and The Hudson Players. His theatrical resume includes performances with The Kent Acting and Touring Company, Theatre Kent, The Akron Children’s Theater, Blossom Festival Theatre, Contract Players, The Player’s Guild of Canton and Kent State Stark Theater. Among many others, he has been seen in starring roles in A Christmas Carol, The Fantasticks, South Pacific, Guys and Dolls, The Robber Bridegroom, The King and I, American Buffalo, I’m Not Rappaport, Pirates of Penzance and Candide.

Lindsay LeonardLindsey Leonard: Mary Warren
Lindsey Sandham Leonard most recently completed her Masters of Music in vocal performance at Kent State University. She was the 2011 winner of the concerto competition most recently appeared as Nella in Gianni Schicchi and Madame Silverklang in Mozart's Impresario. She received her undergraduate at Baldwin-Wallace Conservatory of Music and was 2008 winner of the Mel Hakola Vocal Competition. She has performed opera and musical theater roles in Cleveland area theaters such as, Opera per tutti, Solon Center for the Arts, Kent State University, Baldwin Wallace College, The Beck Center, Cain Park, The Fine Arts Association, Rabbit Run Theater, and Lakeland Theatre. As a solo vocalist Ms. Sandham has performed at Trinity Cathedral in Cleveland for its weekly concert series, the Cleveland Natural History Museum, The Cleveland Indians, and was the soprano II soloist for the Buxtehude cantata at the renowned 2010 Bach Festival at the Baldwin-Wallace Conservatory of Music.

Alfred AndersonAlfred Anderson: Francis Nurse
Alfred Anderson was for twenty-one years the University of Akron’s Director of Opera Theatre, and is now Professor Emeritus. As a singer/actor, Mr. Anderson has enjoyed a 44 year professional career with a stage repertoire of more than 150 roles. He has performed with such organizations as the New York City Opera, the Glimmerglass Opera, Starlight Musicals, the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the San Diego Opera, the Hong Kong Opera, the New Orleans Opera, and the Royal Opera of Gent, Belgium to name a very few. In the Ohio area he has performed with the Pittsburgh Opera, the Opera Theater of Pittsburgh, the Lyric Opera Cleveland, the Cincinnati Opera, the Toledo Opera, the Dayton Opera, the Grand Rapids Opera, Opera Circle, Opera Per Tutti, The Akron Symphony, Porthouse Theater, and for nine seasons, the Ohio Shakespeare Festival.

Megan McConnell: Sarah Good
Megan McConnell, is currently a senior Vocal Performance major at Kent State University. She was last seen performing the role of Mademoiselle Silberklang in Mozart’s Der Schauspieldirektor with Kent State University. Ms. McConnell has played such roles as Mae Jones in Street Scene with the debut of the Nightingale Opera Theatre, Lola Markham in Gallantry, Marsinah in Kismet, Babette in Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, and Calypso in the Odyssey. She has been in the chorus of Puccini’s Madama Butterfly, Handel’s Semele, and Verdi’s La Traviata. Ms. McConnell received an honorable mention in the senior women’s division at the 2013 NATS competition. Megan is thrilled to be playing to role of Sarah Good in Robert Ward's The Crucible and looks forward to continuing her career on both the operatic and musical theatre stage.

Rebecca Seiler is a senior Business Administration student working on a bachelor’s degree in Business Management and minor in Music at the Kent State University at Stark. Rebecca has been singing under the instruction of Laurel Seeds since the spring of 2012. She has sung as a member of The Kent State University Chorus and the Kent State University Chorale. She has performed in various student recitals and recently began singing as a summer member of the Cleveland Orchestra’s Blossom Festival Chorus. Her most recent singing role was as Mabel in the fall 2012 combined chorus and Lyric Theater’s concert style version of The Pirates of Penzance at the Kent State University at Stark. Upcoming performances will be the spring 2013 Lyric Theater’s Evening of Opera Favorites with arias from Elixir of Love, Die Fledermaus and the Marriage of Figaro. Rebecca is singing the role of Martha Sheldon and covering the role of Mary Warren for this production of The Crucible.

Lauren is a freshman at Kent State Stark majoring in theatre. She plans to transfer to Marymount Manhattan College in New York City this fall. She has appeared in numerous community theatre and high school productions. Also, she was an active member in GlenOak’s choral department; including being a member of The Drifters and Chorale. Some of her favorite productions include Anything Goes (Hope Harcourt), Ax of Murder (Darlene), Beauty and the Beast (Silly Girl), and Mulan (Zhang). She was an assistant stage manager for Voices from Hurt Street at Kent State Stark.

Brian NewbergBrian Newberg: Director
Brian Newberg is an Assistant Professor of Theatre and Theatre Director at Kent State University at Stark. Brian’s directing experience (over eighty production credits) includes Broadway, Regional, Equity Waiver, industry showcases, new work development, and many college productions. He has extensive experience as an actor (over seventy production credits) in the New York City, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Oregon areas. He has also served as an Associate Artistic Director for a regional theatre company, run his own private acting studios, and taught at a number of colleges on the west coast before coming to Kent State. Brian is a member of the Stage Directors and Choreographers Society (SDC) and received his M.F.A. in Directing from the University of California, Irvine.

Judith Ryder: Music Director & Accompanist
Judith Ryder served as keyboardist, coach and music administrator with Cleveland Opera from 1976 to 2007. She was Founding Director of Cleveland Opera on Tour, the company’s innovative outreach and education wing, which annually reached 80,000 people throughout Ohio and Midwest, and won the Ohio Governor’s Award for Arts in Education. Ms. Ryder was keyboardist for Cleveland Opera mainstage productions and was the Music Director for the company’s imaginative children's operas, and several mainstage productions. She created a piano vocal score using the first edition of Finale for computer for the world premiere of Stewart Copeland’s Holy Blood and Crescent Moon. Ms. Ryder was Music Director (working with Directors Reuben and Dorothy Silver) for acclaimed Cleveland productions of Jon Marans’ Old Wicked Songs and Terrence McNally’s Master Class.  In addition to her opera and theatre work, Ms. Ryder, a graduate of Eastman School of Music, was a founding member of the Thalia Piano Trio, taught piano, sight reading and ensemble at the Cleveland Institute of Music and the Cleveland Music School Settlement, and was coach and keyboardist for the Robert Page Singers. Recipient of the first Vocal Arts Resource Network's Ovation Award in 2000 for her work with singers and the 2003 Young Audiences’ of Greater Cleveland’s Arts Education Champion Award, Ms. Ryder has been Music Director of the Judson Choristers for ten years. Ms. Ryder is the keyboardist with the Red Campion vocal ensemble which presents concert and theatre repertoire, and has introduced a new participatory music program for student ensembles called “Voices Together.” As one of the founding members of the Cleveland Arts Education Consortium which is celebrating its fifth year in-residence at Cleveland State University, Judith Ryder manages and oversees all member events, projects and advocacy work on behalf of the arts in lifelong learning.

Louis WilliamsLouis Williams: Scenic & Lighting Designer
Louis Williams is the resident technical director, and scenic and lighting designer, at Kent State Stark and has designed over 200 productions in 30 years in theatre, opera, ballet and rock-n-roll. This includes work with such theatre companies as: The American Ballet Theatre II, The Joffrey Ballet II, The Arizona Theatre Company, The Children’s Theatre Company of Minneapolis, The Kenley Players, The Ohio Light Opera, The Cleveland Opera, The Cinncinnati Opera, Southern Arizona Light Opera Company, Carousel Dinner Theatre, The Agora, Cleveland Ohio, The Temple Of Music And Art, Tucson, Arizona, ChildsPlay Inc, of Phoenix, Arizona, and The Scottsdale Civic Center, Scottsdale, Arizona. Read more about Louis Williams.

Susan BlurtonSusan Blurton: Costume Designer
Susan Blurton has designed costumes for various productions over the past 16 years including the Canton Palace Theater, Canton Civic Center, Players Guild, Porthouse Theatre, John F. Knight Center, Akron Civic Theater and The Christmas Spectacular, which was recorded and aired on PBS. She began her venture into theatre while living in New York and freelancing for Off-Broadway shows, mainly as a stitcher and pattern maker. She designed sportswear for the 7th Ave. design house Ellen Tracy/Liz Claiborne. Her duties included designs for sportswear and the dress division, purchases of all fabric and trims, and dressing models at runway shows and photo shoots. While living in L.A., she served as a dresser to Franki Valli, The Pointer Sisters, Gladys Knight and the Pips, and she was a personal shopper for Aaron Spelling. Along with designing costumes, she is an active artist and art teacher. She received her B.S. in Fashion Design from the University of Cincinnati, Teaching Certification from Mount Union University and M.A. from Marygrove College.

Ron JarvisRon Jarvis: Sound Designer
You might recognize Ron Jarvis as a performer, producer, music director, and/or composer for such stalwart North East Ohio acts as The Buckeye Biscuit Band, Ital, First Light, Alex Bevan, Pat Dailey and, most recently, Macaw; the American Worldbeat Band.  He is also an adjunct faculty member at Kent State where he has taught Art of the Theatre and Theatre Criticism classes as well as the three part series of Sound Design and Technology classes for the Entertainment Arts and Technologies certificates program. Ron has worked with world renowned directors Vincent Dowling (composition for The Winter’s Tale at Kent State) as well as Ping Chong (Blindness: The Irresistible Light Of Encounter at La Mama Theatre in NYC) and has served as a live mix consultant at Geauga Lake and Cedar Point Amusement Parks. Although his first sound design for Kent State Stark was for the 2002 production of Dancing at Lughnasa, since 2007 he has designed many of the Kent State Stark theatrical productions including Oklahoma!, The Marriage of Bette and Boo, Into the Woods, The Revenger’s Tragedy, The Mikado, Crazy for YouDating is Tough to Do...and Funny, Too!, Songs for a New World, Plumfield, Iraq, Evil Dead: The Musical and Anton in Show Business.

Stacey Pasternak: Stage Manager
Stacey is a sophomore American Sign Language major. Her previous theatre experience includes Evil Dead: The Musical, Buried Child, Annie, and The Outsiders. She was an assistant stage manager for I Love You Because, makeup designer for Voices from Hurt Street and works for the Theatre Department as a technician.

Molly PattersonMolly Patterson: Assistant Stage Manager
Molly is a sophomore theatre technical and design major, and was stage manager for I Love You Because and assistant stage manager for Buried Child and scenic/lighting designer for Voices From Hurt Street at Kent State Stark. She recently returned to Kent State after spending a year making magic at Walt Disney World! Her previous technical credits include Nunsense, A Charlie Brown Christmas, and Cedar Point's Rock Band Live!

John-Michael RobertsJohn-Michael Roberts: Assistant Stage Manager
John-Michael is a junior at Kent State University at Stark majoring in psychology and minoring in theatre sound design. This is the ninth project he has been involved in on this campus. His work in the theater has ranged from acting (Buried Child, Huck Finn’s Story, Crazy for You), sound design assistant (I Love You Because, Dating is Tough to Do and Funny Too, The Glass Menagerie) and stage management (Anton in Show Business). He was part of the writing ensemble for Voices from Hurt Street. In the future he hopes to continue his work in theatre while working on his degree in counseling.

Stephen OstertagStephen Ostertag: Costume Design Assistant
Stephen is a theatre studies major, who is excited to be involved in the Kent State Stark Theatre scene, where he was a scenic/lighting design assistant for the recent production of Buried Child and was part of the writing ensemble for Voices from Hurt Street. Some of his favorite onstage credits include Lennie in Of Mice and Men, The Cowardly Lion in The Wizard of Oz, and Nick in Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf. Stephen also enjoys directing, writing and designing. When not busy with school, or his two children, Stephen runs the Silver Star Youth Theatre Company with his wife, Tricia.

Bryan SteffeeBryan Steffee: Costume Design Assistant
Bryan has been part of many productions, such as Bye, Bye Birdie, Lil’ Abner, Annie, and The Sound of Music. He was a writer and actor in Voices from Hurt Street, scenic/lighting design assistant for I Love You Because and a costume design assistant for Buried Child at Kent State Stark. He is majoring in theater with a minor in English.

Olivia DurellOlivia Durell: Scenic/Lighting Design Assistant
Olivia appeared on the stage at Kent State Stark as Marcy in I Love You Because, Holly in Anton in Show Business and Melody in Dating Is Tough To Do...And Funny, Too! and stage managed Songs for a New World and Plumfield, Iraq at Kent State Stark. Olivia served as stage manager for Voices from Hurt Street and was part of the writing ensemble. She has performed as Marian in The Music Man, Laurie in Oklahoma, and Grace in Annie. She is in her third year at Kent State Stark studying theatre, and works for the Theatre Department as a technician.

Jered RossowJered Rossow: Crew
Jered Rossow is a BFA Design/Technology major who will be starting his transition from Stark to the Kent Campus this fall. His previous credits include Crew on Evil Dead: The Musical, Costume Design Assistant on Anton in Show Business, Sound Design Assistant on Buried Child, Assistant Stage Manager for I Love You Because, and Sound/Multimedia Assistant for Voices From Hurt Street at Kent State Stark. In middle school he was Sound Manager for Robin Hood: A New Generation, and has been active in productions at various churches where his parents (both pastors) have served throughout his childhood. Jered is very excited to assist the team on The Crucible, as he has not yet tackled an opera.
