Student FAQ

To meet the needs of our faculty and students the University Bookstore managed by Barnes & Noble College is providing a new delivery model for digital content.  As the publishing industry continues to evolve with digital content, Kent State University looks to our bookstore partner to navigate these changes and provide our faculty options to address these changes.  Today, more and more faculty are adopting eTextbooks or publisher interactive digital applications or courseware (examples: Pearson MyLabs, McGraw Connect, Cengage MindTap) and our bookstore is responding to the request for a seamless delivery experience.  The bookstore’s “First Day™” model (which we have named Flash Books) is an inclusive access program that provides for delivery of a publisher’s digital content within Blackboard Learn, for access to students on the first day of class.

What will I see on my student account for any course that will be using Flash Books?

There will be a charge on your student account for the required course material in the Flash Books program.  The charge will be titled Flash Book.  You can see the courses in the Flash Books  model at https://www.kent.edu/studentaffairs/flashbooks/flash-book-courses.  Charges will vary by course depending on the cost of the course materials.

What happens to the course charge if I opt out of the course materials within Blackboard Learn?

If you opt out during the 100% refund period for the class, a credit will be placed on your student account to offset the Flash Books course charge for that class.

What happens if I drop the course?

If you drop the course, you will no longer have access to the course materials through Blackboard Learn.  If you drop the course during a tuition refund period for the course, the charge assessed for the course will be reduced according to the tuition refund schedule for the course.

I have a book scholarship or a book award. How will this be handled?

All book award/scholarships will be loaded to the student’s FLASHcard to be used at the University Bookstores.  If a student would like to use their book award/scholarship to pay for their Flash Books charge on their student account, they can contact the FLASHcard office (phone, email, in person) and request that a portion of the book award/scholarship be transferred to their student account.

If I need to retake a Flash Books course, will I be charged again?

If the student is required to pay tuition again to retake the course, then you are required to pay the digital materials course charge again as well.  If you feel you have extenuating circumstances, you can apply for a waiver of the Flash Books charge by submitting the form www.kent.edu/studentaffairs/flashbooks for consideration.

What happens if I add the course after the 100% registration period and I want to opt out of the Flash Books Program?

If you receive permission to add a course after the 100% registration period and the course is participating in the Flash Books program, we strongly encourage that you make use of the digital course content through Blackboard.  If you feel you need to Opt Out, you will need to complete the extenuating circumstance form at www.kent.edu/studentaffairs/flashbooks and submit as soon as possible.
