Student FAQ

Flash Books is an inclusive access initiative which is a program designed to bring electronic content to students at a significantly lower cost than the traditional paper copies of the book. Content is made available to the student as soon as the course is made available to them via our Learning Management System (LMS).

How will I know my instructor’s course is in the Flash Books program?

In FlashLine, if you click the $ sign on your schedule of classes, you will be able to see the amount of the Flash Books charge.  In addition, when you click the link to buy your books, there will be a notification that the course materials will be delivered through Blackboard Learn and the cost will be assessed to your student account.   Information will also be available at www.kent.edu/studentaffairs/flashbooks

Do I have to participate in Flash Books for a course?

No, you have the ability to opt out of receiving your required course content for any course that is in the Flash Books program.  You must opt out during the 100% tuition refund period for your class.  The opt out process for the course materials is through Blackboard Learn.  If you opt out… you are required to obtain the course materials on your own.  Since Kent State is getting the most beneficial price for these required course materials, we encourage you to not opt out.

Where can I find what date the opt out option expires for a class that is utilizing Flash Books?

If you view your class schedule in FlashLine you can click on the CRN and the web page displayed will show you the refund % dates for the class. The last day to opt out is the last day of the 100% refund period.

What will I see on my student account for any course that will be using Flash Books?

There will be a charge on your student account for the required course material in the Flash Books program.  The charge will be titled Flash Book.  You can see the courses in the Flash Books  model at https://www.kent.edu/studentaffairs/flashbooks/flash-book-courses.  Charges will vary by course depending on the cost of the course materials.

What happens to the course charge if I opt out of the course materials within Blackboard Learn?

If you opt out during the 100% refund period for the class, a credit will be placed on your student account to offset the Flash Books course charge for that class.

What happens if I drop the course?

If you drop the course, you will no longer have access to the course materials through Blackboard Learn.  If you drop the course during a tuition refund period for the course, the charge assessed for the course will be reduced according to the tuition refund schedule for the course.
