Natural Shocks

NATURAL SHOCKS

by Lauren Gunderson

January 29 and 30. 2021

Angela is trapped in her basement, waiting out what appears to be an approaching storm. Though a self-proclaimed unreliable narrator, she begins to reflect on a lifetime of trauma, bringing to light the truth behind her endangerment. Based on Hamlet’s famous “To be or not to be” soliloquy, Natural Shocks is a condemning exploration of violence, abuse, and firearms in America.

Content Advisory: Script contains strong language and references to domestic abuse, gun violence, mass shootings, and mental health issues.

Directed by Erin Ripley

Cast:

Taylor Fox
Kirstin Henry
Megan Polk
Sunayna Smith
Elaine Werren

Zarry: February 26-27, 2021

Dancers perform choreography by Morgan Messer

Zarry

February 26 and 27, 2021

Choreographed by Morgan Messer

This work displays the negative effects of repetition focusing on over apologizing. It pushes language and movement to a point where it loses its potency and credibility. This will be done using theme and variation for movement creation and then using repetition of a singular spoken phrase until it no longer sounds like English and has lost its meaning. I am using the phrase “I’m sorry” to achieve a monotonous apology. If one continuously apologizes for everything then when they really need to apologize does it still mean anything?

Dancers: Hannah Sidol, Angelina DiFranco, Maggie Busch

Videographer: Maddy Haberberger

About Forced

When John Cameron Mitchell was invited to attend Russia’s first queer film festival in St. Petersburg in the fall of 2008, he was prepared for trouble: The hosting cinema had pulled out after a national film figure derided the event as a “festival for child molesters.” Inspired by the courage of the organizers, Mitchell agreed to attend, bringing his Russian friend Sasha along for the trip. This monologue is derived from his diary.

Special Thanks to Lo Denmon and Ken Ditlevson of the LGBTQ+ Center for their assistance.
