Kent State presents Tony Award-winning musical "Parade"
The School of Theatre and Dance's 2019-2020 season, designed to coincide with Kent State University's commemoration of the 50th anniversary of May 4, continues with a production of the Tony Award-winning musical Parade.
Directed by associate professor Fabio Polanco, Parade is centered on the 1913 Atlanta murder of Mary Phagan and the conviction, commutation, and lynching of Jewish factory superintendent Leo Frank. With book by Alfred Uhry, music and lyrics by Jason Robert Brown, and co-conceived by Harold Prince, the powerful musical explores and invites civic discourse on social injustice, religious intolerance, the justice system, racial divides, and civil rights.
Through the production of Parade, the School of Theatre and Dance looks to unpack multiple voices and perspectives through story-telling. "Inspired by the spirit of Epic Theatre, ouur hope is to show how art can 'lead spectators to think, question, and learn about the social conditions exhibited in the work,' consider parallels between the past and the present, and engage in civic discourse," said director Fabio Polanco.
Parade runs Feb. 21 - March 1, 2020 in E. Turner Stump Theatre, located in the Center for the Performing Arts, 1325 Theatre Drive, Kent, OH 44242.
The production team includes music direction by associate professor Jonathan Swoboda, choreography by assistant professor Jennifer Black, costume design by Kelley Shephard, lighting design by Sierra Walker, projections design by Tiffanie Chau-Dang, scenic design by assistant professor Tamara L. Honesty, sound design by Caleb Stoller, and technical direction by Alex Barnhart.
