Assistant Professor Kerry Jo Bauer's Work Featured in Netflix's 'The Dark Crystal'
The work of a School of Theatre and Dance faculty member at Kent State University is featured in a new Hollywood blockbuster. Assistant Professor of Costume Technology Kerry Jo Bauer served as a costumer for Netflix and the Jim Henson Company’s “The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance,” which premiered this month exclusively on Netflix.
Bauer served as a lead draper on the team of costumers of the project, which is a prequel to the 1982 Jim Henson film “The Dark Crystal.” Through the production, Bauer draped and built the costumes for a number of characters including Deet, Seladon, Onica and Mother Almadra Spriton. She also created the patterns for several other characters that were then fabricated by the Jim Henson team in its U.K. shop.
During the sumer of 2017, Bauer’s name was passed along to Julie Zobel, the head of puppet and costume fabrication for Jim Henson’s Creatureshop in Los Angeles. Zobel had learned of Bauer’s reputation as a noted draper able to costume odd silhouettes and her extensive Hollywood career building and costuming dragons, dinosaurs, gorillas, bears and more creatures for various projects.
Over her the course of her costuming career, Bauer has worked on various projects for film, television, theatre, major commercial exhibits and installations. As a freelancer, she has worked for special effects shops such as Animal Makers and Creature Effects as a lead figure finisher and fabricator. Her accomplishments include “The Year of the Dragon,” “Year of the Snake” and “Year of the Horse” at the Bellagio in Las Vegas; the Pepsi-Cola Bears; Vodafone; Samsung; and Gorilla Glue. Through her own company CostumesbyKerryJo.com, her projects include Target’s “Bullseye” dog and Dole’s “Morris the Cat,” and she has built costumes for and worked with large companies such as Career Builders, Sprint, Nickelodeon and Universal Studios. Bauer holds a B.F.A. in Theatre with a focus in costume design from Kent State and an M.F.A. in Costume Technology and Design from Ohio University.
Working on “The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance” was a dream come true for Bauer.
“It was always a dream of mine to work for Jim Henson,” Bauer said. “When I found out that the costume designer [for “The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance”] was my hero and favorite illustrator Brian Froud, I was literally jumping with joy.”
“Kerry Jo understands good design and brought her accomplished eye to the project,” Zobel said. “She set the bar high, and we are so fortunate to have had her on our team!”
Bauer also serves as an assistant professor in Kent State’s Fashion School.
