School Welcomes Dennis Courtney as 2016-2017 Roe Green Visiting Director

The School of Theatre and Dance welcomes Dennis Courtney as the 2016-2017 Roe Green Visiting Director. An award-winning and internationally acclaimed director/choreographer, Courtney will direct the School's production of "Kiss Me, Kate" Feb. 24 - March 5.

Mr. Courtney won the 2009 Israeli Theatre Award (TONY equivalent) for Fiddler On The Roof at the Cameri Theatre in Tel Aviv.

He has been the director/choreographer of over 150 stage productions.  Favorites include Civil War Voices (off-Broadway, 6 MITF awards), Peter Pan with Cathy Rigby, Can-Can with Leslie Uggams, I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change, The ProducersEthel Waters: His Eye Is On The Sparrow, and The Last Five Years.  He has conceived and staged many special events, award and cruise ship shows. On television, Mr. Courtney directed the 5th season opener of TV’s Perfect Strangers. As an actor, Dennis performed on Broadway/on tour in Starlight ExpressJoseph…, Peter Pan with Sandy Duncan, Roza with Georgia Brown, The FantasticksGrease with Andrea McArdle and regionally in many other shows.  Mr. Courtney is a former champion figure skater and proud member of Actors’ Equity Association and the Society of Stage Directors and Choreographers.

The Roe Green Visiting Director Series was established in 2003 following a $25,000 donation, to be repeated annually, from local arts patron and activist Roe Green. Through this generous gift, the School of Theatre and Dance invites a guest professional director each year to work in residency with students and direct one of the School's Main Stage productions. The School of Theatre and Dance is fortunate to be able to offer this diverse opportunity to its students. 

Now in its 14th year, the Roe Green Visiting Direct Series continues to bring professional directors to Kent State University.
