27th annual Tribune Chronicle Scripps Spelling Bee

Local students will compete at the 27th annual Tribune Chronicle Scripps Spelling Bee on Monday, March 5. The Spelling Bee is presented by the Tribune Chronicle in partnership with Kent State University at Trumbull.

The winner will then compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee finals in late May in Washington, D.C. Spellers will also compete for Kent State Trumbull Scholarships: 
$4,000 for the winner, $2,000 for first runner-up, and $1,000 for third- and fourth-runner up. 

Last year, Jeremy Slywczak (Badger), correctly spelled “ratify” and “particle” to best about 30 other competitors from around Trumbull County at the bee.

Over the last two years, Slywczak has earned $6,000 in scholarship pledges for full-time study at KSUT (first place in 2017 and second place in 2016). Riki Kaiser (Bloomfield-Mespo) has $5,000 in scholarships (first place in 2016 and third place last year). Parker Paniagua (Champion) has $3,000 in pledges (second place in 2017 and third place in 2016). And Bello Pinto (Bristol) has a total of $2,000 in scholarship pledges from 2016 and 2017 finishes.
