Clone of Clone of Academic Services

-----Where Success Begins!

The Office of Academic Services exists to help students experiencing academic difficulty at our campus.  Feel free to learn more about our services or departments by clicking on the links to the left-side of this page.  Also, you can view the Student Success Resources page for helpful tips on test-taking, note-taking, studying, probation, classroom etiquette and more.

If you experience difficulty with your coursework, please contact your instructor first, then upon their recommendation call 330-308-7447 or visit the Office of Academic Services in Founders Hall Library.

Please note that there are NO INDIVIDUAL TUTOR assignments for biology, chemistry, English, geology, mathematics, psychology or sociology.  Those subject areas are covered by open tutoring labs to maximize the number of hours we can provide help to students.  Consult the white board outside the Office of Academic Services in the Founders Hall Academic Learning Commons, or see the list below for available tutoring times. Want to be a tutor?  Exemplary students can serve as peer tutors and should come to the Office of Academic Services to register.

The Writing Center

Visit the Writing Center as early as possible in your writing process to make the most of this valuable service! Dr. Chris Roman (croman2@kent.edu) is coordinator of The Writing Center, which is open Monday through Friday during the Fall and Spring semesters. The Writing Center provides one-on-one consultations to help students with writing assignments and projects.  A schedule of available hours is posted on the bulletin board adjacent to the Office of Academic Services and on the door of The Writing Center located in Founders Hall Learning Commons.  In particular, The Writing Center can help you:

· Choose a topic for your writing assignment or task
· Brainstorm ideas for your assignment
· Plan/Organize your writing and/or research ideas
· Develop your topic using relevant details, examples and other support
· Revise your draft, either before or after you receive an instructor's comments
· Learn correct documentation

WHAT IS THE KENT STATE TUSCARAWAS OWL?

The OWL (Online Writing Lab) provides students who may not be able to schedule a visit to The Writing Center an opportunity to receive helpful input on their writing assignments via email.  The OWL, like the Writing Center, is free to any student enrolled at Kent State Tuscarawas. The OWL can help with writing assignments and projects for any class, at any level.

HOW DO I USE THE OWL?

Send an Email to the Writing Center describing your writing assignment and its due date, identifying the class and instructor, and detailing how you would like a Writing Assistant to help you. Attach a draft of your paper to this Email. NOTE: Be sure your attachment is in Microsoft Word Format.

Address your Email to tuscwritingcenter@listserv.kent.edu with the subject heading “Paper for OWL from...”

When your draft is returned, the questions and comments from the Writing Assistant will be included in your text IN FULL CAPS. If you wish, you may follow up by revising and resubmitting your draft for further discussion of your questions and concerns.

HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE TO RECEIVE A REPLY?

You may submit a paper at any time. The Writing Assistants will check for incoming Email when they are not on duty during Writing Center hours Monday through Thursday. While you may receive a response the same day you submit your draft, you should plan for a day’s turnaround. Papers submitted Thursday after 1 p.m. through Sunday will not receive a response until the following Monday.

Because of the limited hours of the Writing Center schedule, submitting papers online should not be considered as a last minute option. Never send papers less than 24 hours before they are due.  For additional writing resources go to: Kent Writing Centers Portal.
