Early Childhood Education Technology
Kent State University at Tuscarawas offers the Associate of Applied Science degree in Early Childhood Education Technology (ECET). The program reflects the demands of today's families and focuses on the unique needs of infants, toddlers and preschool children.
The goal of ECET is to prepare graduates with the knowledge and skills needed to implement developmentally appropriate practices as they relate to each child's development. Students who wish to pursue this degree must possess a commitment to valuing all children, regardless of ability or background. In addition, they must have the ability to work with the child's home and community.
Both career-specific and general studies courses are included in the curriculum to enable students to grow professionally and personally. Admission to the program is selective; therefore, it is important for students to meet with the ECET program director or advisor to discuss requirements. An Associate of Applied Science degree in early childhood education will be granted following the successful completion of the 68 semester hours of coursework and six clock hours for training in each of three areas as prescribed by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services: first aid, communicable diseases, and recognition and prevention of child abuse.
After completion of the associate degree, students also are eligible to apply for prekindergarten licensure through the state of Ohio. Employment opportunities are available in a variety of settings including center-based childcare, home-based programs, hospitals, schools, family childcare and Head Start programs.
The Associate of Applied Science degree in early childhood education technology offered at Kent State Tuscarawas transfers with no loss of credit to the bachelor's degree in early childhood education offered at the Tuscarawas, Salem and Kent campuses. An advisor will explain this option, as well as the selective admission requirements, and help you plan how to complete the preferred order of required courses.
Professionals holding an associate degree in early childhood education are responsible for: observing, recording and assessing the development of young children; planning the environment and activities to facilitate development across all domains (physical, cognitive, social, emotional, communicative) and integrate content areas; working with the families and community; and collaborating with other professionals in the field of early childhood education.
