Newly Accepted Students

Congratulations! Once you've been accepted to Kent State University at Tuscarawas, there are a few things you must do before you can set up your first semester's schedule. Your acceptance letter and the information sheet included with it detail these important next steps.

placement

ALEKS MATH

First, you must complete the required placement testing which includes ALEKS online math placement assessment (all new students) and may also include COMPASS reading and writing assessments (students who are over 21 years old). Students must be admitted in order to take Kent State University placement tests.

All new Kent State University students are required to take the ALEKS placement test for mathematics. ALEKS is a powerful artificial intelligence-based (AI) assessment software product that zeroes in on the student's mathematical strengths and weaknesses, reports its findings, and then, if necessary, provides a learning module to improve the student's knowledge and skill. The ALEKS placement may take up to 90 minutes to complete and should be completed in a single sitting. For more information on ALEKS, log into FlashLIne > Student Tools & Courses > Placement Assessment.

The ALEKS placement test can be taken online from home through FlashLine. Students who wish to take the ALEKS placement test at the campus should report to the Network Services Help Desk located on the second floor of Founders Hall during the following hours:

Tuesdays, 9 a.m. - 7 p.m.
 Fridays, 9 a.m. - 3 p.m.

COMPASS READING & WRITING

New students who have current ACT scores will be placed in reading and writing courses according to ACT reading and English subscores.

New students who do not have current ACT scores must take COMPASS reading and writing. COMPASS is a comprehensive, self-paced computer testing program that helps place students into appropriate courses and maximizes the information colleges need to ensure student success. COMPASS reading and writing may take up 60 minutes to complete. For sample COMPASS questions, visit http://www.act.org/compass/sample/index.html.

COMPASS is offered on selected days and requires a scheduled appointment. If you are required to take the COMPASS assessment, call 330-339-3391 to schedule your appointment.

soar

Then, you must attend a SOAR (Student Overview, Advising and Registration) session during which you'll become oriented to the campus, learn about financial aid, discover your placement test results and schedule your first-semester classes. You cannot attend SOAR without first completing the required placement assessments.

transfer students

Newly accepted transfer students should contact us at 330-339-3391 to find out exactly which, if any, assessments are required. Transfer students who have completed required assessments will meet with an academic advisor to review transfer credit and schedule classes.

New Student Orientation

New Student Orientation is held each August and January to welcome new students and their families to our campus. During this fun and informative event, students will have the opportunity to meet our Dean, faculty and staff while learning about classroom expectations and finding their way around our campus. Parents will enjoy special sessions with our Dean and Director of Enrollment Management & Student services while students get to know one another! The day concludes with an always-exciting game of campus trivia and a lunch in our Student Union. Kick off the school year with fun, prizes and suprises!
