VCD Welcomes International Society of Typographic Designers for 2018 Student Assessment

The School of Visual Communication Design welcomed the International Society of Typographic Designers (ISTD) to Taylor Hall on April 13 for our 2018 Assessment, which offers students the opportunity to gain prestigious ISTD membership.

The annual student assessment scheme is cited as a model of academic thoroughness and professionalism. Unlike many others, the scheme is not a competition as it considers the holistic achievement – not just the final outcome. The overall design process of research, reflection, strategy, design development, technical and production specification is assessed by teams of practicing designers and educators.

Teams of two take on average about half an hour on each project including writing the personal report. These teams are moderated by experienced assessors who insure parity of marking and continuity of the three levels of award – Pass, Merit or Commendation.

Our 2017 assessment awarded eight School of VCD students ISTD membership - three undergraduate students and a graduate student passed, and three additional undergraduates received merit awards.

ISTD engages with universities and institutions across the globe to raise the profile of typography in design education and give students the opportunity to explore and develop typography as an inherent part of the design process, bringing and the typographic gesture to the forefront of their design education.
