The following steps will accomplish creating a Basic Page.

To create a Basic Page, select Basic Page from the Create Content options available from Group Actions in the top menu bar. An Edit Basic page form will open. Complete the form following the instructions below.  Directions for best practices for each field are provided after each screenshot.

The required Title field is where the title of the page is entered. Breadcrumbs, a footer link and the page URL are automatically generated from your page title when you first save your page.  The URL created will be

If your page has a long title, but you would like the URL to be shorter you must enter the short title in the ‘Title’ field then, after the page is saved, the title can be updated with the longer title while the original URL will stay intact.


The Body field is where the content for the main section of your page is entered. A standard within a group should be communicated to all group administrators to ensure consistency.  See Common Mistakes to Avoid for text and terminology guidelines. When referring to students, do not include their name without their written permission; rather, use ‘a sophomore English major.’

To view a larger workspace you can click either:

1.    Click the Maximize icon to see the window as a full screen.
2.    Lengthen the area by dragging the resize corner down.

To see the same editing options below, switch the Text format from Filtered HTML to Full HTML. The functions of the icons shown in rows A, B and C, from left to right, are listed on the Basic Editing page.

The Tags field is used to create a feed or view of event or articles with a specific tag. Internal Basic Pages are not used in feeds so please do not add any text in the Tags field.

You have two options for which type of  1500x600px hero image you want displayed.  The hero image expands the entire width of the page.  If more than one is added a slideshow will appear.

  1. Hero Image in Group Media - Image(s) are added to the page as the group media.  If desired, a short title and subtitle can be added to the image.  This image does not link to other web content.  For web accessibility, the Tooltip Title Text (hover text) should not be used.
  2. Hero Image in Slideshow - Image(s) from another page can be added to a home page slideshow.  Each slide is a separate basic page, article or event.  That pages short title and/or subtitle is displayed on the image in the slideshow and the the title(s) link to it. The image's short title and subtitle will be displayed on the image when the user visits the page.  For web accessibility, Tooltip Title Text (hover text) should not be used.

For both, the following is required:

  • Image pixel dimension must be at least 1500x600px
  • Files must be less than 3 MB (1 MB is recommended for web accessibility)
  • Allowed file types: jpg jpeg
  1. The small feature image appears in the upper left corner of the page above the left navigation. Only the first image will appear when the small feature image is selected.

To be uploaded, a featured image must meet these specifications:

  • Images must be at least 480x480px, however you can upload a larger image and use the focal point to determine how the image is cropped
  • Files must be less than 3 MB (1 MB is recommended for web accessibility)
  • Allowed file types:  jpg and jpeg.

To add an image:

  1. Select the Browse button.
  2. Select Choose File.
  3. Locate and select the image on your computer.
  4. Click Upload.
  5. Select the Next button.
  6. Move the crosshairs to the focal point of the image.
  7. Enter Alternate Text as required for web accessibility compliance.
  8. To add text to a large hero image, add a Short Title and/or a Subtitle to the image properties. For web accessibility, Tooltip Title Text (hover text) should not be used.
  9. To add text to a small feature image, add Tooltip Title Text to the image properties.  The text will be displayed when a user hovers over the image.

To set the featured image as a small feature image, the page must be saved first.  After saving the page, follow these steps: 

  1. Select the Customize this page button from the black bar at the bottom of the page.
  2. Scroll up to the feature image.
  3. Select the image's gear. The Formatter options for: Media (field_page_media) window will open.
  4. Select Image from list of options.
  5. Click Continue.
  6. Select Large (480x480) correct option from the list.
  7. Grab the four-way arrow icon on the right side of the gray bar above the image and drag and drop the pane at the top of the Sidebar column.
  8. Click the Finish button.

Your groups - The group you are signed to will be preselected. If that is the correct group the content should be added to then changes are not necessary.  If it is not the correct group, select the correct group from the list of groups you are a member of.

Other Groups (only available to group administrators) - This field is provided to add the content to a group that you are not a member of.  If more than one additional group is required, select the Add another item button to add more.


If you do not select the Save button, your content may not be saved when you leave the page.
