Pronoun Syllabus Statement - Medium

Pronouns are the parts of speech we use to refer to someone instead of their name, and using the correct pronoun, just like using their correct name or title, is a way to show respect.  At Kent State, everyone has the right to be addressed by the name and personal pronouns that correspond to their gender identity, including gender neutral and neopronouns, for example: they/them/theirs, ze/zir/zirs, etc.  This course acknowledges people of all gender expressions and identities.  If you go by a different name or have not yet changed your pronouns in  Flashline (flashline.kent.edu), please do so at any point in the semester.  Being able to use the correct gender pronouns is important to me, which is why I encourage you to share your pronouns with me and correct me if I make a mistake.  In addition, I expect the same of all students enrolled in this course.  Mistakes in addressing one another may happen, so I encourage an environment of openness to correction and learning.  However, I will not tolerate repeated comments which disrespect or antagonize students who have indicated pronouns or a chosen name.  If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me.   Further resources are available on pronouns (kent.edu/lgbtq/chosen-name-pronouns), changing your name or pronouns (kent.edu/registrar/chosen-name) in Flashline, or Kent State’s Nondiscrimination Policy (5-16.1 & 5-16.2).
