Rationale and Process for Micro-Credentials

In Fall 2019, Interim Provost Dr. Melody Tankersley charged a committee to develop a vision and strategy for micro-credentials at Kent State University. The need to develop such a vision and strategy stems out of rapidly changing current and anticipated needs of the workforce and consequently current and future students.

The micro-credentials working group, a subset of the micro-credentials committee, has met several times with Jennifer McDonough’s project management team (Shelley Casto and Michealle Gabrovsek); including a 3-hour working session. However, more time on this work is necessary prior to seeking input and feedback from the committee.

The future presentation to the micro-credential committee will include updates on the following topics:

  • The micro-credential working group has started mapping the process of credit-bearing micro-credentials (e.g., what would the student experience look like?)
  • The micro-credential working group are developing a business plan and are gathering:
    • benchmark data/information from other institutions
    • communicating with possible outside vendors on how they can assist in our process of assessing market-demand
  • The micro-credential working group are developing a website that will keep the University Community updated on efforts on micro-credentials
