New Deans Named for University Libraries and Stark Campus

James K. Bracken will become dean of Kent State University’s University Libraries, and Walter F. Wagor will become dean of Kent State University at Stark, both effective Aug. 1, announced Kent State Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs Robert G. Frank. Bracken replaces Mark Weber, who is retiring. Wagor replaces Interim Dean Ruth Capasso, who will return to her position of associate dean for academic affairs for the Stark Campus.

“We are confident that following a competitive national search, we have found two deans who are a perfect fit for Kent State University,” Frank said. “Both Dr. Bracken and Dr. Wagor bring high levels of practical experience and the demonstrated ability to lead their respective units to new levels of success during our strategic planning process. As the Division of Academic Affairs continues to make a series of essential academic improvements, we look forward to their tenures as deans.”

Bracken currently serves as the assistant director for Collections, Instruction, and Public Services at The Ohio State University Libraries, a position he has held since 2005. At Ohio State, he also has served in the positions of assistant director for Collections, Instruction, and Main Library Research and Reference Services; head of Second Floor Main Library Information Services; professor in the University Libraries; and adjunct professor in the English department.

Bracken is active with many professional organizations. He serves as reviewer-consultant for Choice and reviewer and assistant editor for CBQ: Communication Booknotes Quarterly. He also is a member of the American Library Association.

Bracken holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Toledo, master’s degrees from both the University of Toledo and the University of South Carolina, and a doctorate in English literature from the University of South Carolina.

Wagor currently serves as the dean of Behavioral and Applied Sciences and professor of psychology at the State University of New York College at Oneonta, a position he has held since 2006, where he is one of two academic deans and holds comprehensive responsibility for the management of Behavioral and Applied Sciences at both the undergraduate and graduate level.

His career also includes service as the acting chair for the Division of Behavioral and Social Sciences, assistant vice chancellor for Academic Affairs, co-chair for the Division of Behavioral and Social Sciences and assistant vice chancellor for Assessment at Indiana University East. In addition, Wagor served as president of Faculty Senate at both Indiana University East and Wright State University – Lake Campus, where he held the positions of instructor of psychology and later assistant professor of psychology.

Wagor holds a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Houghton College, a Master of Science in Developmental Psychology from George Peabody College and a doctorate in developmental psychology and mental retardation research from George Peabody College.
