Kent State Students Support Freedom House Residents

Students assemble a bed at Freedom House

Students in the Flashes 101 class recently took part in a class project at Freedom House, a nonprofit organization in Portage County that helps local, homeless veterans achieve greater self-sufficiency and obtain permanent housing.

The project came to fruition when the class voted to reach out to Freedom House. Subsequently, first year student Daniel Morgan contacted Freedom House to inquire if there was anything the class could help them with. Turns out, Freedom House did need help assembling beds that had been donated.

Taught by Kathy Bergh with the assistance of Peer Support Mentor Reagan Hunt, the class also agreed to have a month-long canned food drive for Freedom House.

"The employees and veterans at Freedom House were so pleasant, and very grateful to see us," said Lettie Friona, a native of Steubenville, Ohio, who organized the food drive to coincide with a day of volunteering at the facility. "Freedom House is a wonderful organization that works hard to put its donations to good use. This experience made me want to do more for them."
