2014-2015 University PrioritiesBeing part of the Kent State University family is a pleasure, a privilege and a reason to be enormously proud. My decision to join this wonderfully dynamic and diverse academic community is affirmed every day as I interact with Kent State’s outstanding faculty, staff, students, alumni and engaged communities; learn more about the university’s many excellent and innovative programs; and as I work with many of you to build on the university’s remarkable momentum of recent years.
As we move boldly forward, Kent State is fortunate to be able to draw on the talents of so many individuals who truly care about the future of the university — especially our students with their ability to succeed and make a difference in the world. That caring, community spirit resounded at every stop on the Presidential Listening Tour, (make this a link to Listening Tour site) and I am most grateful for the dedicated students, faculty and staff members on every campus who shared their perceptions about “the heart of Kent State.” Those perceptions will be integrated into our plans to create a meaningful and success-filled future for the university and those we serve.
Kent State University is poised to determine a distinctive future of impact, influence and innovation. With that in mind, and with valuable input from our dedicated Board of Trustees, I developed five primary priorities and related actions for 2014-15. They will be a valuable guide as our community comes together to articulate where we wish to take this outstanding university and the most direct route to our agreed-upon destinations. Several common threads connect the five priorities, including a spirit of collaboration as one university with regional, national and global impact; a commitment to diversity as a prime institutional asset; and recognition that the creation and translation of new knowledge and innovative ideas are the responsibility of all public research universities.
In the coming months, our far-reaching work will include assessing Kent State’s strengths, opportunities, aspirations and results; identifying our shared institutional vision and core values; and agreeing upon top priorities that will drive our actions for the next five years and beyond.
I hope that, as I do, you take great pride in being part of a university that is undeniably on the rise and ready to define, declare and share its unique contributions as a new American research university.
