Kent State Salem’s City Center Earns Beautification Award

Frank Fife, a maintenance employee at Kent State University at Salem, makes sure the third window decal is seen by all who enter the building.Kent State University at Salem’s City Center received the 2016 Sunflower Award from the Salem Beautification Committee through the Salem Chamber of Commerce for the third consecutive year. The award is given based on the upkeep of the building, including clean windows, neatly maintained entryways and sidewalks, as well as an aesthetically pleasing facade.

The City Center building is the former Salem High School and has been part of the city’s history for almost 100 years. It not only houses classrooms and a computer lab for Kent State students, but it also accommodates the Salem City Health Department, the Hannah Mullins School of Practical Nursing, the Columbiana County Board of Developmental Disabilities and the Creative Learning Center: The Story Book Museum Re-Created.

The Kent State University Board of Trustees today established a comprehensive, national search to recruit and select the university’s 13th president.

 

The events of May 4, 1970, placed Kent State University in an international spotlight after a student protest against the Vietnam War and the presence of the Ohio National Guard ended in tragedy with four students losing their lives and nine others being wounded. From a perspective of nearly 50 years, Kent State remembers the tragedy and leads a contemporary discussion and understanding of how the community, nation and world can benefit from understanding the profound impact of the event.
