Upcoming Colloquium - DEVELOPING A NATIONAL NETWORK TO MINE AGGREGATE MEDICAL DATA The effective practice of medicine is not just about developing new and better medicines, it is also about knowing how to better and more effectively use the medicine and medical expertise which currently exist. In fact, there is much to be gained if we could more fully understand the data which currently exist. Unfortunately, these data are stored in many, many formats and places, and the data are protected by HIPAA regulations. In this talk, we describe how activities and research at Explorys, a recently created company partnering with the Cleveland Clinic, are working together to collect and use this massive amount of data for the improvement of health care. The technology is akin to Google's in some ways; particularly, in the ability to store, index, and make searchable billions of medical diagnoses, medication, measures, procedures, and outcomes. We believe these efforts will accelerate innovation and enable better medicine.
