Dr. Jonahan Maletic Awarded $250,073 in $2M NSF MRI Consortium Grant
Dr. Jonathan I. Maletic, Professor and Interim Chair, was part of a research team granted a $2M National Science Foundation Award. The project is entitled "MRI-R2 Consortium: Development of a Software Traceability Instrument to Facilitate and Empower Traceability Research and Technology Transfer, CNS 09-59924", and is described further below. The work is a consortium between DePaul University in Chicago, The College of William & Mary, and Kent State University. Dr. Jane Cleland-Huang is the lead PI from DePaul and Dr. Denys Poshyvanyk is the co-PI from William & Mary. Prof. Maletic received $250,073 of the $2M total.

IAL Student and Faculty Member Awarded NEA fellowships
Spanish Translation Professor Kelly Washbourne awarded NEA fellowship for translation of "Legends of Guatamala," and Russian translation graduate student Deborah Hoffman awarded NEA fellowship for translation of the prison memoirs of Efrosiniia Kersnovskaia.

Mira Rosenthal Wins the 2010 Stan and Tom Wick Poetry Prize
We are pleased to announce that Mira Rosenthal, a PhD candidate at Indiana University, has won the 2010 Stan and Tom Wick Poetry Prize for her poetry collection titled The Local World. Mira will receive $2,000, and her volume of poetry will be published by the Kent State University Press. She will also perform a reading with Maggie Anderson, judge of the competition.

Wick Accepting Entries for 2010 Chapbook Competitions
The Wick Poetry Center is now accepting entries for the 2010 Open Competition and the 2010 Student Competition. Poets residing in Ohio are eligible to enter one of the competitions. Deadline for entries is Oct. 30, 2010. The winning poets will perform a reading on campus next spring and have their manuscripts published by the Kent State University Press.

2011 Stan and Tom Wick Poetry Prize
This prize is offered annually to a poet who has not previously published a full-length collection of poems. The winner will receive $2,000, and the winning volume will be published by Kent State University Press. The winner will also perform a reading with poet Edward Hirsch, judge of the competition.

Paper with important implications for Dark Energy co-authored by Prof. Peter Tandy
"Void that is truly empty solves dark energy puzzle" is the tantalizing title of an article by the science journalist Rachel Courtland in the periodical New Scientist. Courtland's article is based on a refereed paper authored by Kent State's Prof. Peter Tandy and three other scientists. The work has a connection to the Cosmological Constant. The Cosmological Constant was first introduced by Einstein, but was later abandoned by him; he described it as his "biggest blunder".

Former Apollo Flight Controller Sy Liebergot to Visit Kent State Oct. 4
As the lead flight controller for all the Apollo space missions, Sy Liebergot was a key player in the U.S. space program. Liebergot was at the focal point of the Apollo 13 crisis and played a prominent role in bringing the crew back to Earth safely.
On Monday, Oct. 4, Kent State University will host three public events with Liebergot. He will offer insight into decision making in the U.S. space program, discuss his role in the aborted Apollo 13 moon mission and sign copies of his autobiography “Apollo EECOM: Journey of a Lifetime."

U.S. SBA Funding Supports Kent State-based Flexible Electronics Cluster
Northeast Ohio’s emerging flexible electronics industry recently received a boost in the form of a $499,514 contract from the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) Innovative Economies initiative. The funding was awarded to NorTech, a regional nonprofit economic development organization, leading efforts to develop regional innovation clusters in Northeast Ohio. NorTech will use the funds to focus on small business growth and job creation in the region’s flexible electronics industry.
