How Can Anthropology Help You?The Department of Anthropology at Kent State University offers a variety of undergraduate programs to meet the needs of any student. By offering both Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees, as well as a minor in Anthropology, we make a degree in Anthropology an easy choice for pre-professional development. We also offer three LER’s, three writing intensive courses, and seven courses that meet University Diversity course standards. For advising, contact Dr. Richard Meindl, undergraduate coordinator.Bachelor of Arts (B.A.)The Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) is a general and very flexible degree program in which students are required to take 4 specific Anthropology courses and 21 additional elective hours in Anthropology (at least 12 of which are upper division). ( Link to Undergraduate Catalog or Search Course Catalog ). The balance of hours are met with Liberal Education Requirements and College of Arts and Sciences requirements. The B.A. in Anthropology is recommended for any student who seeks to develop a general background in the discipline, which may be a mix of Archaeology, Cultural, and Biological Anthropology. Students are encouraged to take a minor in a related field (e.g. MCLS, History, English, Geography, Art History). Bachelor of Science (B.S.)The Bachelor of Science (B.S.), with concentrations in Archaeology or Biological Anthropology, is recommended for students who wish to acquire in-depth training in one of these concentrations in Anthropology. This program is more structured than the B.A. and all students are required to take certain courses in Mathematics and Chemistry. Students also elect courses in Biology (evolutionary theory, comparative anatomy), Geology (paleontology), or Geography (mapping skills, GPS). The core of the program is identical for both Biological Anthropology and Archaeology students. This rigorous course of study (72-74 hours in the major) provides students with methods and theory that will prepare them for graduate school and future careers in Archaeology or Biological Anthropology. Minor in AnthropologyThe minor in Anthropology (21 units) is recommended for any student wishing to increase his or her understanding of cultural and biological diversity. Students are required to take three courses in the Anthropology department (ANTH 18210, ANTH 18420, and ANTH 38630) and may choose from a variety of upper division courses as electives (12 units).
