Restoration of an on-campus wetland near Cunningham Hall
Posted Oct. 10, 2011Students from the Conservation and Zoology Club and Dr. Ferenc de Szalay started implementation of a habitat restoration plan in the forested wetland near Cunningham Hall and the R-6 parking lot. During two weekends in September 2011, over 20 students and faculty met to remove a large stand of invasive glossy buckthorn shrubs, Rhamnus frangula. This effort will allow native trees and shrubs to colonize the area. Future efforts will include planting native vegetation, constructing an observation deck adjacent to wetland, and installing bat roost boxes and interpretive signs. The plan was designed by KSU biology students for a course about habitat restoration methods taught by Dr. de Szalay and Dr. Mark Kershner in summer 2010.
