About the Department

From Maria Zaragoza, Chair

Welcome to the Department of Psychology at Kent State University!

mzaragozaThe Psychology Department at Kent State University is a vibrant, stimulating, and innovative center of research, teaching, and community service.  With approximately 40 faculty, 120 graduate students, and 1000 undergraduate majors, we are one of the largest and most active departments at Kent State.

Our faculty are productive scholars who are internationally recognized for their research in areas as diverse as human and animal cognition, psychophysiology, health, psychopathology, clinical assessment, and development.  A number of our faculty have served as editors of major professional journals, and our department has received millions of dollars in federal grants to support our ongoing work.

Our graduate programs provide training in Clinical and Experimental psychology, with predominant focus on strong research training. Graduate students work closely with faculty throughout their education, collaborating on both basic and applied research activities.  Our graduate students are supported with both a stipend and tuition remission.  Our Ph.D. graduates have been very successful in obtaining both research and teaching positions at colleges, universities and medical centers.

Applied research and community service are facilitated by our department’s strong ties with local hospitals, medical centers, and schools.  Our Applied Psychology Center also supports faculty and student research on applied topics.  Our Psychological Clinic, part of our APA-accredited Clinical training program, provides training for clinical graduate students and services to students, faculty, staff, and community residents.

KentHall72Our undergraduate program is one of the largest on campus.  Undergraduate courses cover both basic and applied topics ranging from basic psychological processes to the problems of living.  One distinguishing characteristic of our undergraduate program is that we provide undergraduates with opportunities to get hands-on research experience working with our faculty and graduate students.  Each year, nearly 200 undergraduate students participate in our Undergraduate Research courses.
